Re: Microphone Attenuation
It’s a great mic. Caveat; I’m not a professional. I’m a home recorder. I don’t have many LDC mics to compare it to. It’s not hyped at all. It has massive output and is incredibly detailed. That said it is more forgiving than I thought it might be. I’ve not used it on vocals yet but on congas, drum o...

Re: Microphone Attenuation
btw, what kind is the preamp? It’s an old racked RCA BA71. It has a built in pad but it doesn’t sound that great when it’s engaged. It also has switchable impedance. If I switch it from 150 ohms to 600 ohms it knocks the signal down and seems to preserve the signal much better. Is that accomplishin...

Microphone Attenuation
I’m looking for suggestions for taming a mic with a ton of output (AT5047). My mic pre only has an output knob. What is the best solution? Just dropping one of those Whirlwind or Shure barrels between my mic and the preamp? There was a company called Gas Audio making a rack unit called the GA10 that...

Re: Let's talk your favourite manual fades
I always thought The Police records had great fades. “Spirits In The Material World” and “Omegaman” come to mind. This is an example of a fade that I’ve always hated. James Burton is in the middle of blowing you away with one of his trademark solos and the song fades out. It’s like turning off the p...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....
And I just ordered a set of pickups for my strat from Stonewall Miller. 9.3k output on the bridge pickup! Super excited to hear how they sound.

Re: Is it safe to set a tape echo on its side?
You can with a Roland Space Echo. It even has feet on the “bottom of its tall orientation” if you follow what I’m saying (at least the re-301 does). It doesn’t impede the way the tape feeds in from the little chamber the tape lives in. I wouldn’t do it with an Echoplex though. They don’t feel as rob...

Re: Recording Trends/Techniques that drive you nuts
This is more if a mixing technique, but I hate songs that end with the backing track dropping out and the singer crawling inside your ears and getting all breath-y and stuff. I miss fade-outs (as well as mistakes). It used to drive me crazy as a kid when the dj would dare to interrupt the fade on “E...

Nobody buys physical product any more so I’d say yeah.
“Listening to records” as a pastime. Doesn’t that seem like a dated concept?

Re: D/A Converters
Hi Carl. Thank you for the reply. I edited my post while you were replying, as I figured out that 8 channels out of my tape machine is not what I would need, as I’m not going to go in the box with my tracks (at least not at this point). It’s basically songwriting/arranging demos. Having said that, I...

D/A Converters
I track to 8 track tape and mix to a CD burner for my own projects at home. Is a D/A converter going to give me an appreciable difference in the way my recordings are going to sound? Would it come right off my mix bus in my chain (before it hits my bus compressor) or after the comp and before it hit...

Re: bass drum mic - front or back?
If it couldn’t be both it would have to be the beater side for me. And the drum needs to be as dead as possible. Not resonance. Just need that that attack and “thud”. No “boom”. IMHO

Re: Happy New Year
Spent at least part of the first day of the new year recording some sounds, so that’s a step in the right direction! Intentionality!
Looking forward to a fun, inspiring and creative 2021, and I wish the same for all of you.
Looking forward to learning as much as I can from all of you. Cheers!

Re: How many guitar amps?
I have to agree. After years and years of 6l6 or 6v6 it was a revelation for me when I finally played an el84 amp. My ears were so happy!
