trashing (or cleaning) anything old, corroded, wobbling, half-working to me (just personally) would be a loss of age, dimension, depth, originality and i don#t know what else. actually so. plus this might be another good reason to get rid of that piece of trash. send it over

as long as it is about non real time shifting (which beats any real time shifting anyways) i#ll recommend prosoniqs timefactory - in rare cases soundhack. both on mac.

i second the "yeah: 4 bits (more)" option. all the rest means using your ears. use pow-r dithering to get to 16bit in the end in any case. don#t just cut the overflowing 8bit off.
