That would be awesome mikey! I found another cheap 38 on craigslist (for parts) but no reply so far... I want to get this thing back up as quickly as I can to keep up with the demand that I've somehow attracted with my cheapo basement stood. Also, have you ever had the problem of the capstan needing...

Update: Right reel has become sluggish to the point of postponing any further use. I loosened the little metal brake strip (whatever you call that... don't have the manual with me at the moment), to no avail. I'm thinking that the motor needs deep cleaning or replacement. Has anybody attempted motor...

Re: I Too Want An Monstrous Kick Drum... And Hat
The pedal crashes should sound like the door on a '71 Eldorado being slammed shut. On a giant piece of sheet metal. Maybe procure a '71 Eldorado door, rig it up on a stand in place of your hi-hat and record the track again. ...For real though, physically replacing the hats with a piece (or several ...

Thanks for the tip about the relays, I'll be sure to do that once I get a break between projects. Any idea where to get them? I saw something on a different site about tascam not making or selling them any more, but I haven't looked into it very far. Also, just a bump in hopes that someone has any i...

I've heard pretty much the same about him. Cocaine and extreme skill tend to do that to people. I've been told he bailed on a tour with some other band... and took their van with him. All hearsay, of course, but these stories don't come out of nowhere. Also I think that my needle pressure and anti-s...

Yeah, I referred back to the digital copy and it's the same mix. I just didn't notice it as much before, I suppose. It'd be awesome to see some pictures of the setup. I've read interviews with the drummer where he mentions miking the underside of cymbal bells, squeaky kick pedals, second snare drum,...

Yet another Tascam 38 prob. (three, actually)
Three problems: 1- A constant crackly noise (not regular tape hiss) that starts up when the right tension arm (with the sensor) is engaged and the flywheel starts spinning. Continues for as long as the motor is going. Would demagnetizing the flywheel cure this? Do I need to suck it up and replace so...

Don Caballero 2 hi-hat
Recently got a vinyl copy of this record and the hi-hat (and ONLY the hi-hat) sounds harsh, distorted, and just too present in the mix. I listened back to my digital copy and it seems to be the same, I guess it just never bothered me before. Is anybody else familiar with this record and does this bo...

I've got the same problem. The only thing to do is move either the machine or sensitive materials (hard drives, tapes, other tape decks, etc.) far away. I've got an eight track, so it's more feasible for me to move my machine. yours is a different story, however... if you've got a remote control uni...

Shortened edit answer: if shure makes all the basic types of mics that you need, go for it! Don't buy into brand hype (good or bad), shure will do fine for you until you feel there are better mics out there by different companies. Get accustomed to the different types before worrying about which par...

For drum sounds you might want to consider the Glyn Johns method. Minimal mics, unique stereo image, great rock sound. http://therecordingrevolution.com/2011/01/10/the-glyn-johns-drum-recording-method/ I usually get quite a bit closer than what's shown here, using dynamics/ribbons or LDC's. Hit 'em...

well, not quite that, but (as i've posted 80 billion times) my stock drum shtick is kick, snare, mono oh+2 omnis on the floor with stupid amounts of compression on them. sounds like this or track 3 or 8 on this or mot anything on this Nice sounds. How isolated was the kit on these various recording...

personally i don't like wide overheads, but if you do, then further apart is the way to go. the kick sound is gonna change dramatically with the front head off. if you decide you liked it better with the head on, but it's too subby, try any combo of the following: tune the head a bit higher move th...
