Update- set up drums today and did some test recordings. Normally I do x-y overheads and close tom mics but today this setup worked very well: Kick mic -- fully intact head, sounds very subby but blends well with the middle mic. Probably going to try taking the head off tomorrow. Bottom of snare mic...

Awesome. First and foremost: don't be afraid of pushing anything too far (blown out pre-amps, radical EQ, etc.) Avoid the Behringer to submix unless it's a last resort kind of situation. The Ramsa should be just fine (unless like 12 channels are broken..) Quick bullet list of some things that might...

I edited the original post with specifics, hope that helps.
One song from their demo from before I met them:

(they are slightly less doomy now and have mostly equal amount of fast and slow sections)

I should clarify- 8 channels will be used for playback from tape, so 10 are available for tracking (plus groups). since it's just a trio and vocals will mostly be done after basics, I doubt I'll break out the Behringer (I avoid setting it up if at all possible) I guess I'm specifically looking for d...

Recording a heavy riffy trio in my basement in the coming weeks. Let me know if you have any thoughts or ideas about how to achieve sounds like: witch pissed jeans sleep sabbath high on fire ...etc. (specifically drum ideas!) Equipment: A few 57/58s and clones and such CAD drum mic pack minus conden...

For starting a microphone collection, It's a good idea to "cover the bases" of basic mic types first. It seems like LDC would benefit you the most right now, but try to get one or a pair of each before sinking cash into finding the perfect "character" or "tone". One nice drill will not build a whole...

When I monitor from the 424, there is a TON of hiss.Even though there is a lot of hiss the guitar itself still sounds louder, clearer, and fuller (just with a lot of background hiss). When it hits the computer it becomes a whole new beast. FWIW, I am still using normal bias tapes and haven't cleane...

I see your point, but I was actually thinking the opposite. You could get the tape sound going from the tape outs, but avoid Tascam's crappy mixer. Really the EQ on the 424 is not so good. I think it would be better to eq in the box. Just my humble opinion. Really, nothing on it is much good. The f...

Don't be so attached to keeping the tape on the reel it came on? They came with recordings on them that I wanted to back up before using the reels myself, but I decided to store them tail out because I knew it would be a while until I got around to it (still haven't), and I still wanted them on the...

y'all done scurred him off! Joel, if you're lurking I'd like to know how you decided on this compressor, what new possibilities it has brought to the table for you, etc. (also, off-topic, I'd like to pick your brain RE all those wacky snare verbs and effects on the Dub Trio records. Was it all autom...

could someone post a step-by-step guide for this? Am I crazy? Tails out is a complete workflow all it's own. It's much harder if you approach it piecemeal. When idle, the machine will have an empty reel on the left, and no reel on the right. When you load it, the full reel goes on the right (yeah, ...

Fucking awesome, a guy with three posts calls out one of the most respected and well-liked guys on the forum for posting spam. I don't agree with him that it's an ad (sure sounds like one, but I'll give joel the benefit of the doubt and assume he's got more class than that), but did he really need ...

BTW, since you are brand new to tape, just in case nobody has mentioned it yet, your long term storage for your masters should be "tails out" (the end of the tape at the beginning of the reel). This helps mitigate problems brought-on by print-through... GJ I'm just gonna jump in here and say that w...

3. Using the method described above, I don't know if the signal from the tape outputs goes from the tape then through the mixer and then to the tape outputs?? If it does then you can make use of the Tascam mixer as your sending audio to your interface. If not, well, you won't be able to use the mix...
