In this situation, to me it would be very important to send them out of the class with a good reading list (and online resources, videos, reference tracks, etc...). There's only so much you can teach in 4 hours, so make sure they have plenty of resources to move forward with once they're out on thei...

If you turn a knob and you don't hear a difference something's wrong. But you're not just turning a knob. You are turning a specific knob that you know will alter the audio in some very specific way. It's only natural for our brain/ears to have preconceptions about what the aural effect will be. So...

wow - the Tape Op Messageboard giving a collective "ehh" to recording on 4-track cassette. The times really are changing. I would never have thought I'd see this day come... My sense is that TOMB is giving an "ehh" to the OPs feeling that digital is cold/tinny and full of artifacts, and that casset...

Sounds like you're having the same questions that most artists have- basically forever. The super talented and experienced artists I know seem to still have the same issues of self doubt and desire for more that everyone else has. Just maybe on a different level, with different concerns. I do have t...

And just a side thought, since I'm knee deep in this now- don't forget that exclusivity has always been, and always will be a huge part of the music world. Whether it be Rihanna or Big Star, exclusivity is a currency that is traded on so often it is often not even noticed. Even true in the so-called...

OK fine, impressive quote barrage. I guess I'm just saying that to me, this is more complex than simple digital vs. analog (to me, that binary discussion [pun intended] is such a drag and usually pretty pointless) For what it's worth, I know plenty of musicians slaving away- literally spending hours...

holidayhell I think you may be missing ubertar & my points a little. It's not really a matter of retro for retro's sake, or for exclusivity or coolness. Just an alternate way to connect and communicate things with other people ubertar- I would love to meet up, however... I live on the west coast now...

But it would mean that for it to work, the work itself would have to be intrinsically really good or interesting for it to proliferate. It would have to be good enough for people to spread the word, and to make the extra effort needed to get a hold of it. It couldn't just be the same pop crap or wh...
