Hey RodC, have you tried transformer-coupling the channel outs? I followed your modification plan and it sounds like each channel will have only a single-ended output. I realize that purchasing four 1:1 transformers will essentially quadruple the cost of the project, but I'd also have a hard time im...

EH 12ay7 input impedance?
I've been asking folks for a couple years to no avail. Does anybody know what the input impedance of the EH 12ay7 actually is? I've got tons of killer vintage UTCs and I'm eager to use one as a step-up in front of the mic pre. It would be really useful to me to know the actual numbers, here, to sele...

Fender Champ line output mod?
Hi there! Does anyone know how to add a line output to a vintage Fender Champ? I would love to use mine as an active DI/preamp for my synthesizers and for other instruments (including bass, possibly). I would love to know how to: 1) create an output directly from the preamp and/or, 2) create a line ...

Definitely! One advantage to using the transformers will be to guarantee that the input and output always see a truly balanced connection. I will definitely only use the XLR output as well. I have some Phillips and Telefunken and RCA tubes to try out in both positions--I won't want any ICs in that s...

Thanks, Goygbiv and Lightandmind! Yes, I'll be excited to try out the Peavey tube pre when I get the chance. Also, I found mention elsewhere of using a 1:10 trafo on the input of the EH 12ay7 mic pre (much higher ratio than I was speculating would be possible). This should offer a 20dB boost while a...

Neumann v475 pinout help?
Hi everyone! I've got a Neumann v475 summing amp that I am ready to fire up, however I am very confused about the pinout. Following traces and schematic, I am reasonably sure about the inputs and outputs, however I am concerned about attaching the 24v and 0v rails without being 100% confident. has a...

I agree! One thing seems clear to me, though: tubes and transformers and simple elegant circuits can never go out of style. The simplicity of design is what appeals to me so much about the EH 12ay7. I certainly don't mind that it also INSANELY inexpensive. It seems like no one should be allowed to l...

input impedance?
Also, what is the rated input impedance of the stock EH 12ay7? I suppose that it is 1200ohms or higher, to accommodate modern condenser mics? If so, it might work well to drop the input impedance for ribbons and dynamics.
Cheers!

Step up transformer?
Hi all! Is it possible to use a step-up transformer as the input for dynamic or ribbon mics? This would add a bit of gain and would also increase the loading on the mic, which usually sounds better for these types of mics, in my opinion. Has anyone tried a 1:2 transformer at the input of an EH 12ay7...

FS: Golden Age Projects Comp54 (GAP Comp54)
I have a basically-brand-new Comp54 that I need to sell to recoup the cost of some some other recent expenses. I am looking for $300. The protective plastic film hasn't even been peeled off the VU meter. I have used it for a total of maybe 10 hours. Comes with all original packaging and materials. A...
