Is the "laundry" part of the room going anywhere? The best set up seems to be against that wall. If that's not possible, then I'd probably do as you suggested. Trying different set ups is always beneficial, as the poster above illustrated. You could always get out a microphone and run tests to decid...

LowG, I wish I saw this thread earlier! Since you've got GIK products, even if they were purchased second hand you can feel free to give us a shout on questions about placement for everything you've got (even the T-Fusors and products that aren't ours) and we'd be happy to help! Send me a direct e-m...

It would definitely work as you think it would, but would also have the same downfalls you predict (isolation losses, perhaps loose fibers but this usually doesn't happen after the fabric would be installed). There are other things to consider too, though - fabric can typically light up in flames ex...

You don't need to frame up the room with studs, just simply enclose absorption like OC703 into a framed panel and hang them around the room at all the key points. Having a room entirely filled with insulation on all walls wouldn't be the way to go anyways

Have you got the measurements? Please post them. You can feel free to email me the .mdats as well (alex.r@gikacoustics) to take a look at them. Though yes, I do suggest re-applying the treatment in stages taking measurements in between. It is obnoxious, but ensures the best results. I actually did t...

Any leads on an "affordable" mic to use for room measurements? I have two omni mics available: a Pearlman dp1 with a cardioid-omni switch, and a modded Oktava MK-012 with an omni capsule. I have doubts as to how flat either of them are. Any omni is fine. In most cases with measurement, you aren't e...

As another poster above suggested.. If you've got a microphone handy, download REW (its free) and take measurements at each of the locations to really decide the best setup (I would base it off how the low end looks - the high end s much easier to treat properly) You can check out the following vide...

I found a good deal on some Primacoustic panels for the live room. But they're only 2" deep. Should I save up and get some 4" panels, or will the 2" treatments be helpful? In most situations, thicker is ideal. The 2" should be fine for the first few steps of treatment for the live room though. BTW ...

Yes, you have a quite common problem in most of these setups. In the first diagram, your ceiling prevents you from having an equal stereo image. In the second diagram, your low frequency and high frequency symmetry are off. In the third, your low frequency symmetry is off, but your high frequency sy...

Ha!!

If you're worried about the hole resonating you can really fill it with any material. Sand, dirt, rock, fiberglass.

Re: Incorrect dB settings in REW?

First off, yes - you should be driving your speakers very loud, with mic reading at ~18dB in REW. To get correct dB readings in REW, have your speakers very loud (obviously, not distorting/limiting, but very loud). In REW, go to Tools -> SPL Meter. Press"Calibrate" and select whichever cal signal yo...

Re: Question: Bob Golds room calculator

Fossiltooth, you've done a good job explaining them. Allow me to expand a bit further on the first point: - No modal boost: Xhz to Xhz "Extreme low frequencies where the room should be somewhat immune to developing resonant standing waves." Yes - but moreso, under the first axial mode - we simply ca...

Thanks for the tutorial link! I've had REW for awhile now, but hadn't used it yet because I kept having issues when calibrating it. Your tutorial helped a lot in that regard! However, I may have calibrated something incorrectly. My graph doesn't look too strange, but the dB reading on the left side...

Re: Question: Bob Golds room calculator

Hello! If your main cause is to find out what problems your room is having, I highly suggest testing as opposed to calculating. Calculation is useful before a room is built, but testing is the only way to get concrete details about the space you're in. You can usually correlate what the calculators ...

Good work! Obviously there are a lot of technicalities involved that aren't mentioned, but its best to keep things simple when explaining them. I'm sure there are things I could point out but, as long as you're not saying egg cartons soundproof movie theaters, I think we're okay with saying you've d...
