Some machines have a switch in the tape tension arm that will shut off the capstan when the tape runs out. Try backspinning the take-up reel a bit to see if yours will shut off.
If not - state your brand/model and I'll check it out for you.
Just a tip,
-Mike

Re: Try The TAMPA...
I used to use either an Av 747 or the Drawmer 1960 exclusively on bass, but seriously; try the M-Audio TAMPA - it's my new favorite "DI." Great Class A transparent sound and a killer quiet dual opto compressor that really makes bass tracks stand out. Best of all they just reduced the price to about ...

Re: Pick my next purchase...
It would help to know what type of "sound" you're going for (rock, metal, jazz, country, etc.), but for "general use," from your list; I'd recommend the Beta 52. I think you'll find placement with it is less painful as well!
Hope it helps,

Re: need to buy nice pres--first time
Check out the Drawmer 1960 - it's a studio staple. They flat out rock on kick & snare, vocals, even as a Bass DI. Track record longer than your arm. Variety: yup - you'll need that. I would advise getting a few different pre's for different situations; they're like spices to a chef - it all depends ...

Re: I need a vocal mic!
IF you're looking for a tube mic (you didn't say?), check out Pacific Pro Audio's LD-2UBE http://www.pacificproaudio.com Many studios here in SoCal are getting wind of this mic - it's a Neu_ann killer. At $299 - including power supply, it is already approaching "sainthood." Hope it helps...if it doe...
