Re: The age old debate of grounding the shield/shell on XLRs
I’ve repaired a lot of ribbon mics over the years, and I find across many microphones, having the microphone body connected to ground, which is often provided by a grounded shell, results in a microphone that rejects noise better.
Some mics will connect pin 1 to the body, but many do not.

Re: My two-tone m160
Mine took a spill a while back and it dented the grill. It seems fine, but I’m worried it might be off just because it took the hit. It’s sounds fine I think, I might just be paranoid, and it might not be the little delicate flower I was led to believe it was. That dent tho… You should be able to o...

Re: My two-tone m160
I wasn't aware that Marik was still doing repairs? I know he is really busy with Samar, which is great to see! I had a cache of NOS Beyerdynamic ribbons for a short period, but people jumped on it, and alas they are all gone. Most of the M160 reribbons I do these days are the alnico version, as Beye...

Re: Name 3 core mics
Inside, an M500 has a mini-pop screen that sits right over the ribbon--and that, of course, is in addition to the headbasket itself. I don't think that you're gonna blow your M500 in front of (most) guitar amps--it's pretty well protected in there. I concur. I repair a lot of M500, the internal pro...

Re: RIP Chris Garges @cgarges
Such an out of the blue shock. Always great advice, and willing to listen to my ramblings in the weeds about ribbon mics. Just a genuine great guy. We mainly interacted around ribbon mic repairs, but was always great to talk with. He told great stories, and helped so many people! Fly on, Chris Carges!

On the extreme fuzz side, the Way Huge Swollen Pickle is always a ton of fun. Nice shaping controls.
I find them used for $60-80.

Re: RADAR users: need help with session controller
Here's what I see:
Black-2
Brown -3
Yellow-5
Red-7
Orange-8
Green-9
If some of your colors match up to that, they may be the same. The question is did they use a consistent color scheme over the years. One would hope, but I can't answer that.

Re: Potentiometer grease?
It depends on the faders. Penny and Giles faders, for instance, should not be lubricated at all. They should only be cleaned with distilled water, or at most a mild detergent ( distilled water with a little dish soap). It's not about "what do I add to make it smooth again", it's more "how can I get ...

Re: help troubleshoot a buzzzzz on Beyer M160
Happy to look at it if needed. If you decide to open, do be careful as the wires on the Beyer output transformer are very tiny, so should be considered somewhat fragile. The hum could be no ground connection to the body, if the other noise( if there is an other noise) is related to the signal you ar...
