Re: What Did You Work On Today? 6-12-04

Got over the flu. (I know... It's june, and I got the stupid flu.)

Also, read part of the Hobbit, cleaned out the drawers in my office, and made and ate a kick-ass eggs benedict, even with home-made Hollandaise. And had a Bloody Mary.

It's been a pretty good day.

Re: 8 Channel DA under $1000

Actually, I've found the MOTU 828 mkII to have fine converters. And it absolutely IS a standalone unit. That's my favorite feature about it.

Re: Hooking up to a multitrack

IF (and it looks like this is a big 'if) there are switchable inputs on the mono channels between 'mic' input and 'line' input, you can route the eight outputs on your multi-track to each of those corresponding channels, and then flip the switch once you've recorded there, so you're listening to wha...

Just don't have her buy anything too ridiculous. Things tend to get trashed on stage.

That said, get a phrase sampler. Fun, fun, fun, fun, fun.

Re: What sound are we aiming for?

It struck me recently that the sound of a lot of rock recordings is the sound of a band playing in an arena. Since, after all, you don't invite thousands of fans to come see you in your practice space. Then it struck me that the sound of indie rock is the sound of a band playing through a fifteen ye...

Re: the most rock 'n roll lyric of all time

I offer for consideration...

Robert Plant:
"I'm gonna give you every inch of my love"

Old Dirtry Bastard:
"I got burnt once, but it was only ghonorea."

Joey Ramone:
"Hey, Ho, Let's Go!"

Didn't anybody see '24-Hour Party People'? Clearly, Martin Hannet was a genius. Hardly any point in the film was so belabored.

Damn silly movie, that.

How we monitor...

I'm curious. What are you listening to your mixes on? What would you rather be listening to them on? I've got a pair of Mackie 624's. They're about five feet apart and six feet away. Also, I got a shelf-unit stereo with an RCA input to 'cross-reference' with. Not too helpful, I'm afraid. What's your...

Re: help me build this new mic locker. w. $4000

The BLUE Dragonfly is an AMAZING microphone for acoustic instruments. It's a little more than the baby bottle. Great drum mic. phenomenal. I love it. Clear. seems to add some meat to those bones. I bet it's good
for bass cabs, but I haven't had the pleasure just yet.

Re: Mackie HR624's... You think is good, you think is eh, or

I'm just getting used to mine. They're my first pair of studio monitors, and I don't regret it. At the very least, they're unflattering. I mean that to be a positive trait. I'm having a similar problem to E.H. with really hearing the low end, but I also feel like my room blows. I need to do somethin...

Re: Film Production Audio Mics

Funny you should ask. I just got my Audio-Technica 815b in the mail yesterday. That's the long-gun version, which has a narrower pick-up pattern (also longer range, as a result). So far, I like it. It cost about $250, which is a little more expensive than the 835b. Both long and short versions come ...
