much easier to work on the bottom end on an individual track.

160's or 1176 is great on bass to level it out....

Hey Sam, Yeah it's a tough one. You want something memorable, but not stupid (there was a studio in Sydney called "Big Jesus Burger"). I agree - numbers are boring... "Studio 123" I went with the name "One Flight Up" for my studio as I'm on the 1st floor of my building, and I remember those vintage ...

Hi m_france, Sorry I can't be of help. But I do love these stories of tracking down the histories of audio gear. Let us know how you go! Best of luck, Nick PS: I take it the console in Konk (ex-Air) isn't the original Konk console, right? i heard that one was parted out? I certainly saw a few module...

I used to have the UA 2-610 dual pre unit. Can't say I was ever particularly excited by it. But that's just my experience.
Would like to try the Telefunken sometime!

A couple of overhead mic choices I've used recently - all mono overhead recordings:

RCA 77DX - on a cover of a 30's jazz piece.
Coles 4038 (like early Ringo...)
AKG D19C (like Ringo...)

Cheers!

I tasted some tape once..... not good.

Can't remember the formulation, I'm afraid ;)

But in all seriousness, I've used 468 quite a bit.... no problems with shed or stickyness.

Hey Blungo2, Sounds cool! I know what you mean about the lack of top end sparkle.... good idea to use a SDC... Try a few mics on the Oud and let us know what works best. Nick PS: I think you misread a word in my last post.... "old jazz cover" not "oud jazz cover".... though that would be cool! The j...

Hi all, Interesting thread. My approach is always 'keep it real'. I love real drummers, real kits, real mics, real recordings. I don't 'look down' on the use of samples or anything else, it's just not my way of working. I had memories reading the OP of the saying that went around in the 80's and 90'...

Hey Blungo2, What kind of music is it and what kind of sound are you after? That's what guides my microphone selection. eg. when doing an old jazz cover this past week, we used an RCA 77 ribbon mic on vocals. Just what the song needed. We ended up using the 77 as a mono drum overhead as well. :) So ...

I'm using Audio Studio Manager for invoicing and estimates. It also lets you put in all your gear and the condition etc for record keeping. It's Mac only and available in the App Store. I have to use other accounting software for taxes but this keeps the schedule, billing, and gear organized. Hi Gr...

I reckon Insurance is the way to go.
I'm a sole trader (in Sydney Australia).
Business insurance covers me for $20 million public liability. So if anyone injures them self, I don't have to worry. It also covers fire and theft to a certain amount.

Best of luck!

Hi, I don't know whether I'd bother with M/S. I recorded a trumpet and flugel horn player today, actually. Vintage MD421 about a foot away, and an RCA 77DX a few feet away and up a bit. The result: 2 really good, but different sounds/tones to blend (and pan if needed) to my heart's content. Certainl...

Hi there,

It's hard to know exactly what the trouble is without more info. But for what it's worth, I've got an MX70 at my studio and we had to replace all the relays recently due to noise issues..... I'd recommend getting a good tech.... :)

Best of luck with it,
