Re: One final ride for the 388
BTW, that's two mics on one guitar cab, which is maybe dumb on an 8 track. I am thinking of putting a Royer and a 421 together on it, since I've never tried that.

One final ride for the 388
I have a Tascam 388 that I barely use, so I'm getting ready to find it a new home. (I feel guilty that it doesn't get enough love.) HOWEVER, before I let it go, some friends of mine want to record a single on it. (Well, maybe I suggested it.) For the 388 lovers, I have two big questions: 1. What's y...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....
I am upgrading my console by the Summer or later, once I do I might put up my A&H up for sale, if it won't be used for monitoring headphones that is, and it fits the new room. I'll put it up here for sale if / when I do. Parts are still available, and I have the tech manual someone from the company...

Re: Anyone ever use one of these kick mic mounts?
Haven’t checked yet, but a dpa 4060 might drop through the vent hole in my Rogers kick. Hmmmm I want to try that, too, but I have some different lav mics. Not sure they can handle the SPLs though... Mine are Sanken COS11, though I have an old Countryman B6 as well. Maybe dangling down by the beater...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....
You both make sense. And you’re going to make me want a pair of the coppers too!

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....
I got the 990s but 512s look cool. And re: Albini, I probably oversimplified what he was saying too much. I think he’s right to some extent about using the desk so things are faster and the session keeps moving and doesn’t get bogged down. But also he’s not using a Mackie! Anyway, I’m stoked to get ...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....
Nice. The Copper is their Neve-ish one, right? I thought about that too. I've got a couple Copper and a couple Gold preamps from Hairball. I had one of the 1176's but sold it a few years back. They make great stuff and the Lola is one I've had my eye on for awhile but just don't have room in my 500 ...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....
Just pulled the trigger on a pair of Hairball Lola kits. Can't wait to try them with my new Royer 121 and RE-20...

Re: Ghostbusting in a Mackie 8 bus
Did you usually have to remove the PCBs? Or did you just do the ones you can reach after removing the bottom cover?

Re: Ghostbusting in a Mackie 8 bus
Success! I think opening up and re-seating the ribbon cables did the trick. I still see a little of the phantom meter activity (on louder passages/bass there are occasional blinks of the -40 meter lights across all the submixes), but the audio is routing properly and sounds good. Seems like I'll nee...

Re: Ghostbusting in a Mackie 8 bus
OK - minor progress. I am using a -20dbfs tone from my field mixer to test things. Also Spotify from my computer on 1/4" TS inputs. I can now solo up the inputs and set a level! So that's good. And the periodic meter blinking seems to have stopped. I can hear the audio clearly when it's solo'd, but ...

Re: Ghostbusting in a Mackie 8 bus
Good to know. I opened it up and applied Deoxit to all the ribbon cables that were accessible without fully disassembling the thing. (There must be some I can't see on top of the PCBs.) I also exercised every single knob and fader, and applied Deoxit to every singe jack, then worked a TRS cable in a...

Re: Ghostbusting in a Mackie 8 bus
Thanks, I'll try that thorough cleaning, for sure. I think this thing has been sitting still for years. Maybe even decades. As for the ribbon cables, a bunch of different Gearspace threads indicate that Mackie did a lot of replacing of the ribbon cables when these things were new, including many und...

Ghostbusting in a Mackie 8 bus
I was just gifted a Mackie 24*8. Yay! A free console! However, upon first inspection, there's a weird, intermittent crackling that seems to happen on the master bus. (Any audio I've sent through it, on any channel, cuts out intermittently.) It also seems to happen occasionally with light bumps/touch...
