Prototype #0, which was longer than the two shown, did a great job killing a particular flutter echo in my living room. But I need more, MOAR!!!
Those look cool. Can I ask what the materials are, and how you determined the exact size?

BTW, in wurst position, do you tend to point the null of the ribbon up (toward the cymbal)?
The ride is kind of in the null, as is the shell of the drum.

Thank you. I will definitely give that a shot.

Re: Going for it

Do you have a second Tape Op Ribbon? I've been using one in the wurst position a lot and it does amazing things to the BD sound. Better than the outside mic. I do! And right now neither of them is in use. I'm using all Fireface's 10 inputs now, but I just realized I can probably use my Sound Device...

Re: Going for it

Thanks, Nick. I think you're right and I decided to mostly keep things as-is in the interest of consistency. I'm excited to add a "wurst" mic on a future recording, but I think we're getting decent stuff right now so I'm not going to mess with it. The only change I made was swapping in a dbx 560A on...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

A dbx 560A and two Hairball Audio FET 500 kits. And a JHS Pulp N Peel v4 for only $120!

The dbx was great on snare last night.

Re: Going for it

UPDATE: We finally started tracking! We're working in their (cold) practice space, with a low tin ceiling. But so far it sounds pretty good! My biggest issue is that I want to keep tweaking the mics even though we've got some keepers already. I should probably leave well enough alone, but I keep wan...

Re: Recommend me a wild delay pedal

Wild. I actually thought about starting a thread this morning about how much I love this thing: https://reverb.com/p/ibanez-es2-echo-shifter It's a pretty cool sounding standard delay pedal.... until you flip that "Oscillation" switch. Then any setting of the feedback knob past about 9 o'clock takes...

Favorite use for Tape Op ribbon

Do you have a Tape Op ribbon mic? I have two and like them but I’ve always been afraid to destroy them with SPLs so I don’t pull them out enough.

What’s your favorite use for it?

Re: Fabric for bass traps/absorbers

Don't know if you're still looking, but I bought some fabric from GIK Acoustics. It's $10/yard instead of $17/yd for the Guilford. It is also fire-rated. https://www.gikacoustics.com/product/st ... -the-yard/

Re: Going for it

If you want to save an input, try miking the snare from the side! It emphasizes the sound of the shell but still picks up the snares pretty well. The attack from the head will still be in your overheads, anyway. Then, you can put that extra mic somewhere else (center of the kit above the kick is gr...

Re: Going for it

There are times that I've set up a dummy guide vocal mic just to be able to keep that sound if I dump the vocal. good idea. I may setup 2 scratch vocal mics in the future -- one for vocals and one for "bleed". I've had times where the live vocal was good, but the singer wanted to punch in a single ...

Bullet heater might help, and add a element of danger to get the band psyched.

Re: Going for it

These replies are very helpful. Thanks, all of you. David, the room I want to use is a 100-seat auditorium in our community center. I'd likely set up on the stage, where ceilings are pretty high and there's a lot of space. I could probably get the band set up in a line that way, as you suggest. As s...
