I would suggest taping off the pickups too -- they do attract the little filings that the steel wool sheds. +1 on this recommendation. I worked in a stringed instrument repair shop for several years and We always taped off the pickups. The filings go everywhere. You DON'T want them in the pickups.

The other benefit of artist tape: If you are switching between mixes you can peal off the tape and stick it to the wall until you need it again to touch up that songs mix.
