Sony used 'hybrid' mic preamps, line drivers and summing amps. Those are potted with el caps inside. They will all eventually fail. There are no spares. Buyer beware. Let's tell the whole story about this. First, it's true that there are potted parts in the transformer less Sony Mic Pres, but the s...

[The following is hearsay and not official research] Two reasons for the difference: First, I've been told by people with PhD's and patents that there is either no audible difference between 2.8 and 5.6. Second, I've been told by very senior mastering engineers that 5.6 sounds worse than 2.8 due to ...

Any Mix Engineers with DSD recorders
I'm in the process of writing up the KORG MR-2000S DSD recorder review for the next Tape Op. We have two mixing engineers set up with their own Korgs and I have one in mastering. I'm looking for one more engineer who can provide me with mixes captured at 24/96 AND on the KORG at 1-bit 2.8 sample rat...

DIY reviews
The Austin Ribbon Mic is really really really nice. The top end is extended and smooth. Look for a review. Also in the build stage http://www.hairballaudio.com/ Hairball Audio Lola 500 series pre-amps and a nice piece of Tube Gear from DRIP electronics http://www.dripelectronics.com/ http://www.fark...

Building your own 703
You'll want to look at companies like Guilford of Maine or others that deal with fire-treated fabric. Acoustical Surfaces, Inc has many different acoustic fabric vendors. http://www.acousticalsurfaces.com/acoustical_fabric/index.htm?d=4 Also note, if you hang your 703 diffusors away from your wall, ...

We buy used macs from mac of all trades in Florida. Good experiences with them. http://www.macofalltrades.com/ In my room, I just switched to a PC Audio Labs rack mount computer. http://www.pcaudiolabs.com/ Since I have to use PC for Sequoia, I believe I have to buy an audio-built PC. Got an i5 with...

SSD
You can put your OS on the SSD, but I wouldn't have any working data or swap files on one. Current thinking is our frequent read/writes will destroy a SSD.
Booting to an SSD is killer killer killer, though.

It all depends
Lot's of real schools offer masters/bachelor's degrees. Usually, engineering programs where you get both degrees in 5 years when you graduate. That piece of Jeopardy trivia aside: We've had maybe six of these RC kids come through. Most were very young ( 18 ) and confused about what the path to becom...

T15 in use
Over the weekend we had a big drum session for an upcoming Ben Shannon CD. For drum overheads they had a pair of 1970's KM81's borrowed from http://www.seanmcdonald.com/fr_home.cfm (a wonderful Pittsburgh engineer). For the preamps, they had many choices, including API, Neve (current UK make), Neve ...
