Recapping stuff - WILL IT NEVER END?!?!?

Sheesh. Today I recapped my Boss TU-12 tuner (vintage mid-80's?), and sure enough, it started working correctly again. Except for the two tiny ones that were hidden under the meter... need to order a couple more tiny little 10uF caps. Those apparently work with the built-in mic. Guess what one funct...

Re: Banjo Recording?

A banjo is basically a drum... really, I swear! So you want something that can handle LOUD transients, and while you don't want it to push the high end you don't want to neglect it either. I guess try a few things in the "mics that can handle loud stuff" category, and by all means use the pad if the...

Re: diy mics - big fun for all!

Anybody have a problem with not getting much high end? I built a pair a while ago, and they both sound "dark" in a ribbon mic kinda way. I know they're not supposed to be bright like a Chinese condenser, but they sound like they have a blanket over 'em. Any idea what I might have screwed up? Do bot...

Re: What Did You Work On Today? 1-27-04

I think I've figured out the trick to using the Digi-Key catalog (works with Mouser, too): Have your computer nearby... the website has a pretty good search function. Do a search for the most basic value... "12K", and that'll get you close. From the list you get you'll able narrow stuff down quickly...

Re: What Did You Work On Today? 1-27-04

I'm another DigiKey catalog victim... I do like DIY, but when it comes to sitting down with the catalog and ordering EVERY FREAKING PART... well, it's tough.

Had to shovel about 5-6 inches of snow out of my driveway, too. Got some nice snow here in Michigan, probably more than normal at this point.

Re: really technical question about 12ax7 in preamp of gtr a

First change I'd make to your approach would be to set it up as adding/subtracting a capacitor instead of trying to swap the complete network. Set it up with the lower value of cap as always connected, then have a switched cap that makes up the bigger value. Put the switch on the ground side, maybe?...

Re: Playback Mediums for Live shows

With CDs and MDs they would likely want a "pro" playback deck to provide more on-the-button starts and such.

Maybe look for an old stereo reel-to-reel deck? Cheap to use, fairly reliable, even looks cool.

Jim Varney rocked... I saw "Ernest Saves Christmas" a few years back and he played a bunch of different (and all very funny) characters.

Re: Can you recommend a decent chair for the studio?

Get a couple of different chairs, and move back and forth once in a while. I've found my lifetime chair, but they stopped making them in the 50's, and no you can't have my spare. ;) I also like those kneeling chairs and/or the big exercise ball used as a chair. Those tend to force decent posture and...

Re: You know you're in trouble when...

The trouble with doing bar sound is that you have to like being in bars... which drastically reduces the pool of qualified sound techs.

A couple channels of mic preamp from the recent TapeOp J-FET project. One or more of those interesting mp3forkidz multi-pattern mics.
