Re: Hot Dog Amplifier

Why not just use a big Polish sausage as your mix buss?

Re: DIY mix-buss?

Granted that opamps are not perfect.

Still, an opamp summer can be prototype with Radio Shack parts and powered from a couple 9v batteries... a pretty painless way to start.

I read some interview where Waits talked about recording the innards of big rocking chairs... old Lay-Z-Boy types of things. I'm pretty sure that's the sound at the beginning of "Murder in the Red Barn" from Bone Machine.

Re: DIY mix-buss?

For the simplest mix buss I'd recommend an op-amp. Basically you set up the simplest inverting amplifier circuit, say 10K resistor on the input and on the feedback loop. The actual inverting in becomes a "virtual ground"... which means you can just add more inputs with more 10K resistors, and there ...

Re: Studios using plurality when there's really just one guy

After a day of further thought, I would suggest the following version of the "Silence of the Lambs" quote:

"It sings in tune or else it gets the hose again."

Re: DIY mix-buss?

It's dead simple, actually. All you need is a reasonable buss amplifier, which can be done with an op-amp or two. Or a FET, or a tube... simpler than a mic preamp, most likely. Especially if all the inputs are fed from the same sort of source (DA ouput?) and you don't need any volume/pan controls. F...

Re: comparisons between cheap sd omnis

What issue is the TapeOp diy omni detailed in? Is there somewhere online I can find the information? I haven't soldered anything since Stage Lighting practicum in college, and that was probably a little less delicate than what is necessary for audio equipment, but heck, gotta start messin' up somew...

Re: What type of studio vibe do you like?

I like a functional vibe... especially as a musician.

But it's gotta be clean (cluttered is OK). Nothing worse than a place that smells like a bar with the stale smoke.

Re: Ear Plugs

(Right, Norton is now North...) I took a close look at the specs on the Sonic II filters... the package says "6dB" but that's what they're allowed to claim since it's not flat. I think that 6dB was down in the lows; the really nasty ear-damaging stuff above 1K was more like 15-25dB reduction. But st...

Re: Ear Plugs

I finally bought the custom-fitted earplugs. They're definitely nice... especially for long car/plane trips! I used to use the Norton Sonic II filters, the orange ones with the fins and the little metal filter inserts. Those worked pretty well for $12. For actually being a musician I'd wear one on t...

Re: How To Properly Turn On And Off Phantom Power????

Couple of different possible reasons:

1. Might have a momentary partial connection (only one pin of two) while plugging in.
2. Current-limiting resistors on mic input will slow current surge into mic when turned on.

Re: Replacement Elastic String For "Spiderweb" Mic

Local camping store had some heavier black elastic cord in the rock climbing section. Might be a bit too heavy-duty, but it worked fine for some DIY shockmounts.

Re: diy mics - big fun for all!

Been playing with this stuff again... I've also ordered about half the parts I need to try one of those mp3forkidz projects. What I've been doing lately is trying to put the omni capsule on the end of a few feet of cable but still use the phantom power circuit. Results are interestingly mixed! I did...

Re: comparisons between cheap sd omnis

As pointed out in the article about building the Tape op omnis - they're a variation of the RS pzm. The power supply is based on a design used to give RS pzms a ballanced output. They do sound different but not all that different. Not exactly a variant of the RS PZM, but rather the phantom circuitr...
