Re: Join The Get A Life Club
I'll take that "most pathetic New Year's Eve" trophy this year... Spent most of the day and all of the night driving back from Colorado. I think we were in the middle of Iowa when midnight actually hit.

Re: DIY: Anyone build their own gear?
I'm hoping to build the LA2a one of these days. Parts are pretty expensive, though. Short term I've built some of the TapeOp mics, and next up is the more recent TapeOp J-FET mic pres.

Re: Multimeter, soldering and making cables ??????
BTW,
The meter can only tell whether the electricity can get from "here" to "there". If you wanted electricity to be able to go between those two points, then you've got "continuity". If you didn't want electricity to be able to do that, then you've got a "short".

Re: Multimeter, soldering and making cables ??????
The store-bought cable is correct, YOUR cable was out of phase. Don't be confused by the word "short" from your meter. When you're using a continuity setting on the meter to test a cable you want it to beep (and show a "short") when connecting matching pins (pin 1 to pin 1 should beep, pin 2 to pin ...

Re: Handcrafted Guitar Amps
I love this story, Corin, and you're so right. There are a lot of poseur tone snobs out there who will buy anything "boutique" whether is sounds good or not. Once in a while I have a mild urge to get a cabinetmaker friend of mine to put together a few "boutique" wooden amp cases. It's not that hard...

Re: Recapping a console?
More specifically it usually means replacing all the aluminum electrolytic capacitors, since those tend to dry out after 20-30 years.

Re: underneath the piano
At the moment I typically use a couple of small condensers up by the hammers (a pair of Oktava MK012s, on a stereo bar and pointing past each other from the middle of the keyboard range) and then a Sennheiser MD-421 on the soundboard somewhere. Last time was through the largest hole in the metal "ha...

This is the sort of thing I'm pursuing these days:
(78 rpm just isn't fast enough for a Leslie-style tremolo, though. Back to the drawing board...)

Re: Mics on a B3 cabinet?
That link pretty much covers it, although back in the 80's in our home studio we found that a Radio Shack PZM was easily wedged into the top of the cabinet for the horn.
Make sure you've got the cloth cover on the bass rotor! It makes a huge difference in reducing wind noise.

Re: gear manual trading center?
Awesome list... I wish more companies were like Soundcraft in providing old manuals. Soundcraft has pretty much everything available, even down to a scanned-in copy of the crusty old manual for the 1S I first learned pro audio on.

Re: What is Santa Claus bringing you?
I'll probably treat myself to a "real" acoustic guitar after all these years (though I've been told repeatedly that the old no-brand is due to pop apart any day now, it's been over a decade and my only beef is the action). I'm also planning on building some mic pres, some more TapeOp omnis, and hope...

Re: Fear and loathing
Bottom line is you need to figure out what you really love doing, and then you'll know what you should be doing. I play a few instruments, and I like engineering... really I like digging into circuits and fixing things. So while it might seem like a PITA to be hired to "obsess over noise floors", th...

Re: diy mics - big fun for all!
The capacitor voltages should be at least 25vdc for the electrolytics (the 10uF), and at least 50vdc for the 1uF caps becween the capsule and the transistors. 1/4 watt resistors are plenty big enough. As for capsule choice, you should still be able to order the 60AY until Feb 15. After that, dunno. ...
