Re: ampex atr100 v atr102??
I believe 100 was the series and came in these configurations:
101 - mono.
102 - stereo.
104 - 4 track.
Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong?

Re: Favorite Drum Sounds
black crowes - amorica - especially "gone" - huge... "Amorica" often gets mentioned for its drums and while it's good, to my ears, the drums on "By Your Side" by the Black Crowes gets my vote. I think producer Kevin Shirley always gets a slammin' drum sound and the music retains it's raw edge. List...

Re: Drummer leaves beater on kick, sounds like crap
It's all common sense really. Playing with the beater in dampens the drum and destroys the tone and resonance. One of the fundamental techniques I learnt when playing drums is that while hitting the drum is important to get a sound, exiting the drum was far more important to getting a great sound. T...

Re: the most rock 'n roll lyric of all time
AC/DC nailed it. "It's a long way to the top" has got to be the first and last page in the book of rock poetry. If someone asked me what rock'n'roll is, I'd play them this song. This is a corker from Shook Me, "She told me to come but I was already there". I think The Boss is a great story teller. "...

Re: API Tracking
I'd like to offer this example of one of the finest sounding discs I've ever heard that was API tracked and mixed. A friend of mine engineered this and I remember when he first played me the unmastered mixes how awe inspiring the sound of the project was. Spooky and surreal. This was also done at K...

Re: Favorite mics for recording tom-tom's?
An alternative to the 421 is a 441 which is a fantastic and versatile mic.
Also a special mic that has better hat rejection on a snare that works great on toms is a Beyer M201. Best of all the M201 is considerably cheaper than a 421.

Re: API 525 comp or Drawmer 1969 ME?
I absolutely love everything that API make and the 525 comp is no exception. It takes a little getting familiar with but it rocks. There is no attack control so it doesn't suit everything but I love it on individual drums, bass and vocals. The two ratios are 2:1 and 20:1 and I find that I use 20:1 q...

Re: Rim Shotz
If I understand correctly, you might be referring to a "rim click" or "cross stick". Some methods I use: 1. Two mics through two preamps. One with the gain set for the cross stick and the other for the backbeat rimshot. Later you can cut or mute the non essential parts in the mix. 2. Incorporate an ...

Re: Monitors Active or Passive?
I'm not really sold on the amps that come with active monitors. I think many of them are under powered and not necessarily built/designed well. Many of them get so hot that they shut down. I'm generalising here so there are exceptions. Mostly I believe you'll get better value and performance if you ...

Re: new TO issue
Being from Australia, I've never read a single TO issue and something tells me I'm missing out on something good. It seems that a paid overseas subscription is possible but since it's essentially a free magazine, wouldn't it be great if there was a downloadable PDF version for all to enjoy. It sure ...

Re: kick drum mics?
The Beyer M88 is a great live kick mic. Tight, focused with plenty of attack. And when it's not being used for kick, it makes for a great vocal or electric guitar mic.
