Re: can someone recomend some powered monitors?

I think that the M-Audio BX-5s/BX-8s are passable. I'm not a big fan of the 20/20's.

Re: Man o' man, I don't know what to do. Help a newb please.

I highly recommend the MOTU 896HD if you can do firewire. I started out with the first version of the 896, which was nice, but the HD has some features that you might find useful. Most important to me was the addition of DSP cuemixing that allows all channels to be monitored, and the cuemix to be mi...

Re: Where to buy racks online?

If you search for "Flight Case" under the Musical Instruments section on Ebay you'll come up with a bunch of results. Sorting in decending order on price seems to end up with the most applicable results first. At bare minimum you'll find enough manufacturers of cases that it'll give you some more pl...

Re: best 6-8 channel pre for ~$1k

Agreed. The best thing that I ever did was buy an Avalon 737sp that was way out of my league. I learn off of that thing every single session that I do. Granted, as a free studio owner, it's the only nice pre i have, but that will change soon. =)

Re: Tax question. (Not sexually related material)

Well, if it's not there, it's not there. And if it's not there, then cashing at least some of the IRA out doesn't sound like a bad idea. If you get a chance, search around for a debt calculator. It'll pretty much prove that at the rate of interest that you have, and at any given minimum payment you'...

I'm kind of going through the same thing right now, but my thinking is: Up the overall quality, then buy individual pres for some diversity.

Re: Tax question. (Not sexually related material)

Leave the IRA alone. Wiping that out to solve this isn't the way to go. I had to pay down my CC debt when I was 20, and that taught me an awful lot. Right now I never carry any CC debt greater than 1k. I hit that from time to time, but agressively pay it off when I do. Keep this in mind: Using credi...

Re: Mac OS X DAW Selection tips....?

I'm a big fan of Logic. With the new versions of Logic that are coming out, you'll be getting even more for your money. For $999, you get everything. Every plugin and module available, including the new Space Designer reverb, and the ESXmkII sampler. For less money you can go with the afore mentione...

Re: Thinking of trading my G4 MDD for iBook G4. Wise?

I'm running logic 6.3.1 on a DP 1.25 Ghz G4 tower with a MOTU 896. Whereas this is a bit different than the iBook situation, I'll say that logic on OSX rocks, and the firewire core audio drivers are tight. I think that if you don't have plans of using tons of tracks and pluggins, adding cards, a gre...

I've heard good things about the Oram Octasonic, and I've seen them on ebay for around $950 USD.

Re: How do I make Abbey Road in my bedroom on a laptop?

I've found that a little bit of acoustic treatment can go a long way in improving sound. There's probably no need to over-do it, but a bit here and there to keep reflections down may help you out. If you want to go a bit further, auralex will give you their suggestions for free if you fax them your ...

Preamps for OH and general use

I'm looking for a good set of pre-amps, perhaps 2 or 4 in a box - maybe something like an RNP, Meek TwinQcs, 1969 Mercenary, trident s20, focusrite ISA-428 - that would rock on overheads and be usable in a variety of other apps as well. It doesn't have to have compression + EQ, but that would be nic...

Re: Stereo EQ

If you're willing to spring about $1600 the avalon 747sp is pretty kickin'. Stereo EQ + Compression. For less money, maybe ook at some of the Joe Meek stuff like the TwinQcs.

Actually, that's a really good point. Before you go upgrading, it's always a great idea to double-check all compatability. You can be in a world of hurt if you go jumping the gun.
