Mic pre shoot out A Designs vs Neve vs Millennia
I recently had a chance to shoot out all of the A Designs solid state mic pres as well as an original Neve 1073 and a Millennia HV-3D. I thought it would be helpful to include a couple pres I knew pretty well. We did kick, snare, OHs, electric gtr, acoustic gtr, bass DI, vox and tamborine. Me and my...

About half my living is mixing records that other guys have tracked. It happens for many reasons (one of which I guess is that I am OK at mixing records). Sometimes the record company rejects the original mixes and hires me to remix, sometimes if the budget it tight a less expensive guy will track i...

Out stuff is a lot of my bread and butter, but I think it would be hard for me to beat the time I recorded a piece for 12 opera sopranos crumpling paper bags. God Bless Canadian funding for the arts!!! Also on a recent project over in Italy I recorded a gospel choir in a 1000 year old church singing...

Re: External Mixers vs. Controller
A controller is basicly a giant mouse. search the forum and you will find plenty of arguments about this, but my opinion is that your mixes will sound better using the real console, if that is an issue.

Re: Upgrading overheads?
The Shure KSM 32s are my fave OH mics and any price point for just the reasons you mentioned. They do not get harsh when the drummer really digs in to the cymbals

Re: mixing in a foreign environment
I mix in lots of different rooms all the time and many times it is not realistic to bring my own monitors so I brink a couple CDs I know really well and I listen to the constantly. Through out the day I will keep flipping back and forth between my current mix and the CDs I know really well. There ha...

Re: travelling with gear
I bring gear all over the world, always a dicey proposition but I hate the thought of life without my distressor.... The two best ways to go: 1) Get an really nice ATA approved shock mount case. Downside with that is that they are expensive and heavy so you can often get nicked for heavy baggage fee...

Re: Looping
There are a lot of great looping tools onn the market ande the one that is right for you depends on your budget and how you like to work. The Echoplex of "EDP" is really the king of them all but some of the less expensive ones can be really cool as well. You can check out my looping project here htt...

Old School Black Metal is very different than new black metel etc Ask them to give you somme CDs they love the sound of and st...
