You've got an sm57, and access to some decent things. I'd say that getting a higher quality LDC is the way to go. If you weren't tied to guitar center, I'd say try to score a used blue mouse for $600. It sounds wonderful on pretty much anything. AT GC, I'd go for an at4047 or at4050. Maybe an akg c2...

My gearlust is waning too. I set up the singer in my band with a $36 behringer stereo usb converter and an old yamaha mini mixer, some decent mics and some absorption panels, and I'll be damned if doesn't sound almost as good as my conversion/preamp options costing an order on magnitude more. The lo...

I like the latest National, I felt like the last three records outshine the first two by a mile. Ditto the Walkmen's last two. Different strokes etc etc ...

Spoon's Transference left me feeling like they were going through the motions. I was hoping it would grow on me the way GaGaGaGaGa did, but no.

I like the sound overall, here are some suggestions: - de-ess both the vocal and the guitar, and the reverb return. The finger noise is way louder than any notes being played on it. - Less cymbals on the drums, I'd like to hear a little more meat from the kit. - I agree that the vocals could be clea...

I don't think of them as particularly well known, unless you were paying attention to the DC music scene of that era (early 90s). They're probably best known as Archie Moore's band before Velocity Girl, but we're still talking fairly obscure, right?

Either one of your mics is internally wired out of phase (it happens) or one of your cables is.

I've had good luck with de-essing via a multiband compressor in these situations. Was this a 3-mic setup? If so you don't separate tracks printed with close mic and snare/toms. You could try some drum replacement software to bring some of the meat back in. To keep it more natural you could take your...

Let me get this straight: Windows 7 is bad because you're afraid it won't be stable, but running OS X on unsupported hardware is going to avoid that problem?

Is anyone having stability problems with Windows 7?

The old saw as I remember it is: 1) pick your software; 2) pick an audio interface that is problem-free with your software; 3) pick a computer that is problem-free with your audio interface. AMD is fine for probably 98% of all situations these days, but If I was asked to place money on which was mor...

A great player I know used a gibson goldtone with his that sounded pretty stellar, don't see any reason why another tube amp wouldn't be good. But since I don't play a pedal steel, that's the full extent of what I can say.

FREE: Lexicon Core2 soundcard

This card works with Windows 95 and 98, no XP drivers were ever released. It does alot better on Intel systems than AMD. It hasn't been used in a decade, but worked fine last time it was plugged in. If you give me $6 for shipping in the continental US, it's yours. 4 analog inputs + 8 analog outputs ...
