I like the Altec M11 omni (coke bottle) by the bridge. I move it around, to taste. Being an omni, it's not got the proximity effect which is good, but the preamp needs to be clean, otherwise it'll mix the low frequency movement of the bass with the tone creating a mudfest down there that EQ can't se...

My interesting trivia tidbit learned in the course of this project: Apparently the 5840 tube was originally designed to be a hearing aid tube. Wild. Probably not really for hearing aids, the 5840 draws too much filament current for that - the filament battery would only last a couple of hours. 6418...

Re: Build it yourself!
There's the forum at prodigy-pro, lots of activity there, too. Gearslutz has that sort of forum and it doesn't get much activity either. Recording.org used to be where a lot of DIY'ers hung out but since that part of the forum got canned, most of them moved.

Re: How much recording have you done?
Did some live-to-2-track (open-reel) of a couple concerts about 14 years ago, and some demo stuff that way too. Probably about 20 hours of tape. Then I stayed away from recording till 2001. Since then I've filled up about 200 hours of DA88 tape (probably about 75 or 80 hours of material) doing mostl...

Re: earwax candles and other witchcraft!!!
I did the same test on the ear candles. Same thing - same residue inside the candle either way. Sometimes none, sometimes a lot - same as when done on people. My sample size was probably five or six candles. The vacuum created by the candle while it burns is only a couple of inches of water. You als...

Re: Re-tubing U47?
EF14 isn't just a different filament voltage from the VF14. The cathode material is different, and there are some other differences to make the tube less likely to have grid leakage currents. There's a good writeup on Klaus Heyne's forum. Search for it, for sure. Apparently about one in 10 EF14's wo...

Re: If you have a console, are you dumping it for digital? &
I was going to post here... then junkstar beat me to it! Exactly! I write software on a computer all day. I've got a small digital mixing board (DM24) and a small HD recorder (HD24 .. one of their better pieces of gear IMHO) and that works for me. I'm actually looking for an 32 ch analog board in th...

Re: Studio Mics Live?
Yea, I've seen that, too. I always use a mic on my bass. Depending on the venue I either just play loud and get the main mic to pick it up, or bring a D112 on stage.

Re: Studio Mics Live?
Bluegrass has pretty much a defined instrumentation, it hasn't changed since the '40's. The instrumentation hasn't changed, the music has changed a bit, and the speed at which it is played at today is quite a bit faster. Horns? Only if you melt them down to make banjo tonerings. AT4050 is ...

Re: What Did You Work On Today? 1-10-05
drove to work, 6:45-7:45 day job, 8-5. cut and shaped mesh for mic grill, 5-5:30 drove home, 5:30-7:30 (icy roads - normally it's a 1/2 hour drive) tested a mic capsule I built last week. too much high end. poor pattern. need to tweak holes in backplate. 7:30 - 8:30 tested a modded 3630 compressor. ...

Re: why is my analogue mixer (Soundcraft Ghost) so noisy?
Warning - techie stuff here... it sounds like something is oscillating at a super-high frequency. Maybe one of the mix-bus summing amplifiers or something like that. This can come from a power supply not giving enough voltage, or bad ground somewhere, or a bad (or maybe too clever) design, or an op-...

Re: Click tracks again...
I've done both. For live-off-the-floor I love no click. For live off the floor plus maybe a vocal overdub or two, maybe a guitar overdub, no click is ok too. If a band has not rehearsed with a click on a very regular basis, no click. Banjo as an overdub without a click? Very, very difficult. The ban...

Re: Alesis HD24 Tips.
I think it's when the HD24 is trying to slave to something else, and that something else is delivering its 'clock' via ADAT lightpipe. I use my digital mixer as the word clock source with the HD24 as slave, and that works fine. Upgrading the firmware is a no-cost item. Download the file from the Ale...

Re: Alesis HD24 Tips.
One tip: Don't use the OPTICAL CLOCK mode, if you're in a digital environment. Give it a word clock, use the right cable, and it'll be happier. It's internally terminated. If you try using OPTICAL CLOCK sometimes it glitches kind of randomly during recording. I use mine with a Tascam DM24 board, alo...

Re: standup bass tracking issue
Of course, for rockabilly (if you're fortunate enough to do some), you might want more fingerboard sound. I've never been happy with a pickup, but some jazz works well with a blend of pickup and mic. I've only occasionally done the bass+drums recording, and if you point the mic not right at the bass...
