Re: A 1-mic drum recording has me rethinking so many things
Sounds good! It doesn't not sound like 1-mic but anything that makes us rethink things is worth its weigh in gold. It doesn't sound lo-fi or dirty, which is no easy trick with one mic.AND — the drummer says it's all good if you wanna listen. Here's an mp3

Re: I’m about to record some drums, help me not screw it up
+1 on all the above wisdom A full drum mic setup in a low ceiling untreated room is a challenge but you can do it with experimentation. If you don’t have time to experiment (even if you do) one approach is to get your front of kit/room mic(s) to sound close to a full drum mix all by themselves, pre...

Re: Low passing drum overheads
Dynamic EQ as a high shelf works wonders to tamp down exaggerated spikes and you don’t have to shelve off everything up high. Just the ice picks. I will, gulp, admit to using Izotope’s dynamic EQ very often.

Re: Cassette Transfer plugin?
Seems like the tape deck you’re using to play the cassette would affect the noise level. Do you have a nice one? Does Dolby NR suck?

Re: Cassette Transfer plugin?
1 vote for doing as little cleaning as possible on one version and then a squished and scrubbed version to share with others. I always go back to listening to the former. But maybe that’s not normal

Re: ? BULLSHIT ?
It sounds like you’re well on your way to kicking ass. As long as you continue putting this much energy into getting really good at making records, which includes being critical, you will find your voice and your own palette of tools that aren’t bullshit. Some of them may not apply to every studio, ...

Can someone recommend a site like Tape-Op for classical audio recording? Prosumer to professional would be great. Thanks!

Re: Amateur classical players in NYC on shoestring
Good question. The video guy is slower than I, so we’re still waiting on him. Meanwhile my slideshow was just so I could send it to the artist to hear it. And it is a tad close but that’s to avoid pesky audience noise. There is a good bit of room in there, but there’d be more if the crowd was houseb...

Re: Amateur classical players in NYC on shoestring
It's been a while since I recorded classical music, just rock, so I don't have many examples. But any time I approached a potential project, they asked to listen to my classical work. Now I will have some to point to as I've been scheduled to record a series of pro pianists and soloists who are audi...

Amateur classical players in NYC on shoestring
It’s been a long time since I recorded classical music, but I am trying to get back into it, rebuild some skills in my brand new city, called Brooklyn, NY 😊. It’s cheaper than ever for non-engineers and students to grab a beginner kit and hit record, but what is a good way to find needy classical mu...
