I built the fatman a year ago and must've fried an IC, because I could never get the MIDI to work on it... I fried an IC in my Fatman. I have the desktop enclosure, and the too-flexible metal backpanel touched one of the ICs and killed it. Paia diagnosed it and replaced the IC, and added some space...

I went the hardware store route as well. The mic below (built from the circuit on this board, and with a cardiod capsule) uses a puttey can, a faucet end, and some hardware.
