A lot of Albini's arguments against digital have less to do with aesthetics and more to do with forward compatibility. He usually cites early digital tape formats as the reason he will always use analog. "I'll always be able to find a tech or fix it myself". Which is true. But, I'm not sure the arg...

That is my most hated guitar sound. Why do people do that, even for live sound?
The soundguy spends a lot of time in the 80's, I guess.

My band was on (cable) TV!

Public access, but still pretty cool. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWV4T3-i-0k Fun experience...soundcheck was very technical, lots of interruptions to fiddle with stuff...bass was di, guitars were sm57s hung in front of the grill, vocals were 58 and beta 58 (didn't notice the drum mics, looked li...

That's a '68. The aluminum piping around the grillcloth is the tipoff. I have a '68 bassman; looks like it's almost the same amp.

DX stuff was better used in other kinds of old music (e.g., the bass sounds in Detroit techno; Autechre). You can make those machines do a lot of wild stuff if you're willing to program them -- which most people aren't.
Detroit bass and Autechre? Try a tx81z. Dirt cheap, and nasty.

I PS: And what's she talking about "it's not that much more expensive"? I love tape but it's at least $75/reel for 30 minutes of 1/2" tape which isn't even close to the cost of 2". Even 1/2" 8-track is getting too expensive for the normal tapeopper, unless you've got a cache of tape. And that is a ...
