I'm probably wrong but I think i read somewhere that Albini uses a woofer on the kick from time to time to get that huge sub bass sound...
Try using those hollow cardboard poster tubes directed towards the sound source with a mic at the end...that can produce some interesting sounds

I got a Shure 10A dynamic for about $60.its basically a cheaper version of the sm57 i think. I think they're discontinued but I'm sure you'd pick one up on ebay pretty cheap. Check out Soundscapes SSHDR1+! They're about $300-$400 per unit now-very cheap since Sydec brought out the SS32 and new Mixtreme cards! Brilliant DAW's even now!
