You might start off (after school) in a community college. I took a course at one and learned a lot. They are also cheap. Also, buying a simple recording program or downloading demos are also good things to try.

It maybe that your card is routing the input internly into its output. Try making sure the inputs in Cubase are enabled and that they are being monitored (the monitor switch).
That is all I can think of now.
