I've been doing this for a community radio station for a while now - and ditto for the good advice in the above posts. Glyn Johns type drums works well for a 4 mic drumkit setup, close mic amps, band in a circle facing each other with singer (on a dynamic mic) opposite the drums, if possible. if the...

no worries, frank and i held it down, watching as they were setting up the bar for 'white trash nite'. it took us a while to figure out why they had layed down shag carpeting and there was a dryer, yet no washing machine, set up in the back of the bar... (un?)fortunately, we left before they started...

Dealing with DC Offset

hey all, at our radio station for the past few years, we've been using chinese ldcs (superlux) which have been reasonable up until recently. we've been noticing some pretty crazy DC offset problems on some, where the waveform is lookig like a side view of a fish-skeleton. the Electical Engineer type...

single-point stereo mic rec?

any advice on a single-point stereo mic? a friend of mine is asking for a recommendation. i'm guessing it'll mainly be used for field recording of music/interviews, and the recording rig will have xlr inputs/phantom, etc, something like a DAT or a marantz pmd660... ahh heck, for good fun, any 1/8" s...

i've noticed Neko's long time affinity for reverb as well, both on recordings and live. but why so much? at times it feels distracting from her (great) voice....

incidentally, when i last saw Neko, Kelly Hogan was singing backup/harmony, and it was amazing!

i think you hit the nail on the head with feeling overwhelmed. sometimes its just nice to get the work done without having to explain what you are doing, or how to do everything to people around you. but, since we are a volunteer organization (KGNU indeed), it's important for us to strive to incorpo...

When people want to "help"

any advice on this or at least a good story? I engineer at a community radio station for in studio performances/interviews. In addition to our usual adequate and capable team of engineers, assisstant engineers, etc.. we never have a shortage of sincere people around who want to "help". If they ask, ...

Re: darn firewire drives (and laptops)!

thanks. here's how the job went: <and apologies ahead of time if this sounds ranty, noobish, or naive. I normally do live in-studio mixing where these issues don't exist> I did a test record run with the LaCie drive at home, and had no problems recording 4 tracks into the laptop/firewire drive/002/P...

darn firewire drives (and laptops)!

I just bought a laptop (14.1" 1.2GHz iBook) to use for remote live recording with my digi 002r. Since an external firewire drive is recommended, I went and picked up a 120 GB firewire (brand tb disclosed later) drive, took it with me to the dress rehearsal of the performance I'm recording tonight. c...

Re: Phantom power - leave it on or off?

Is there any reason why this mind set mind have been instilled in him? if he's seasoned, it probably came from issues around the older ribbon mics that could be damaged by phatom power. I've always been inclined to leave it off based on the notion "if you can turn something off, only turn it on whe...
