Re: Guitars: New, used, or vintage
A word on the "lawsuit" LP copies: very many of them don't have a solid maple cap on the body but have an arched laminate, a bit like how a 335 is formed, with a dead space between it and the body. I've seen one ebay listing put this down as a "chambered body". Uh uh, it isn't the same thing. Often ...

I'm in for a pair, and I can pay. (= Fiance will kill me, I'll run the interest for a couple years.)
BTW, I posted links to this buy at The Lab, home of happy modders. Maybe a Lundahl transformer group buy will also materialize.

Re: New Analog Tape Product Announcement
BASF/Emtec 911 was bias compatible with 456 and reportedly of similar sound, though it had its fans and detractors. I'll bet that's the formulation. 900 will be ATR's +9 forumula.

Re: Records that suprise you by sounding great in mono.
Grandapaboy's Mono. Rock record that kicks ass. Stereo can be worse than mono because it excuses bad arrangement - you're shoving a house full of stuff into a two bedroom apartment, but you've put in shelfs so it all kind of fits. Hard panning guitars left and right is using the stereo field to keep...

Re: Purple Audio
You should really check out the discrete opamps. Holy hell my console sounds amazing with those jammers in the tape path. Seriously insanely good. I had hardy 990's in there before, and this is a different ballgame altogether. Wow. The purple opamps are not potted so "you should never have to throw...

Re: READ THIS IF YOU LIKE TAPE
There will be a High Output formulation based on some of our old favorites, and a lower output formulation based on a very old favorite. Word was they had negotiated for the BASF/Emtec 900 formula when Emtec folded. Is anyone else reading this comment on the lower output formulation to be 468? Awes...

Classic digital recordings? Talk Talk, "Spirit Of Eden". Recorded on a Mitsubishi digtal reel-to-reel of all things. Absolutely beautiful. Thank you Mr Phill Brown. How can you listen to that? Don't you here the wall of hiss on it? And there's no volume - that needed to be put into the computer, no...

Re: Do you like Dolby SR at 30 IPS?
It's trivia to me, since I have no NR and only 15ips decks, but I believe SR was designed for 15ips use only, to get about the same noise perfromance as 30 ips no NR. The high frequency whine does seem a bit odd, so I would recheck that you have everything set up right. My understanding is that with...

Re: Seeking suggestions for 'Dark'non-ribbon mic - under $20
I think it's a cool mic, I'd like to own one. But I would not call it a dark mic, as requested by the initial poster. Some great mics have that presence boost and brightness that will disqualify them for this thread, one of my faves, the M-88, being a case in point.

Re: Seeking suggestions for 'Dark'non-ribbon mic - under $20
If the Nady ribbon is really out of your budget try a Beyer Soundstar mkII M400. Tried one for a while and the treble would take the head off of most Shure dynamic mics. If you're interested in the Nady, there is a European rebadger who has the same mic but with a different grill, for like $180. I ...

Re: Seeking suggestions for 'Dark'non-ribbon mic - under $20
I think the PL 10 is the same as a 660. Great on bass cab. Huh, I thought the PL6 was the same (PL series version) of the 660. I'm probably wrong though, there are so many different EV mics it gets pretty confusing. Never handled a PL-6, but the pictures I have seen look much like the 660, and the ...

Re: Seeking suggestions for 'Dark'non-ribbon mic - under $20
EV PL-10. You have to hunt carefully for a good price, but they can often be had for $150 or less. It is a variable-D dynamic, so no proximity build up, but it does have a fairly loose, woolly sound in the low mids and no big presence boost. The BLUE Ball might be a candidate (Banjo Mart was running...

Any band whose 2nd single is a cover song. (E.g. - Nirvana making a hit out of Killing Joke's "Eighties".) "Bands" that continue on with 1/3 or fewer of the original members, especially when it's just some chumpass excuse for a singer who likes to wear kilts and doo-rags who, even with all the money...

Nope, Tacoma were an independent company, but I believe Fender just gobbled them up.

Re: What ever happened to "Indie" rock?
Once Indie Rock became a sound instead of a philosophy it was doomed. Now record execs talk about "Indie cred" which means the band has a crappy sounding recording so that opens them up to an extra market. This is exactly it. "Indie" is not a genre, it's a marketing label. It's meaningless as any s...
