The only times that I've ever had this problem it had to do with the power supply for a firewire drive. I solved it by using a power supply with a 2 prong plug rather than 3. You might try using a ground lift on the drive (if it is indeed a firewire drive).

any 7200 rpm ide drive should do fine. i regularly max out our pt mix systems in voice count (64 or more tracks) on standard 7200 rpm drives (2mb cache) in firewire cases... internal will only be faster. keep it defragged for better performance. fwiw i notice much more difference in drive speed when...
