Re: Ryan Adams
I had kind of written Ryan Adams off until a friend played me Love Is Hell pt. 1. Of course, all I knew of him til then was his "New York, New York" single. What do you guys think of the production on Love Is Hell? I'm crazy about it. I think there's as much emotion in the sounds on this record as t...

Re: Drum Tuning & phase cancellation
Semi-related: I don't know how many people have tried this... Another cool trick, if your floor tom has legs rather than a suspension mount, is to put some peices of semi-squishy foam under each floor tom leg. It really increases the tone and sustain. What's happening is that when you hit the drum w...

Re: Dumb question about Cosimo Matassa intrvw in new TO
(Without the mag in front of me either) I took it to mean that they balanced their leves for the mix coming out the machine, as opposed to doing it at the board. I may be way off base. Adjusting levels to tape makes more sense. I've seen Val Garay do it on a tracking session...riding the vocal, pian...

Re: Drums in a corner of the room vs. middle of the room
I like to start with the kick drum and move it around until I find the spot where it's got the most oomph. Once I find the general area I like, I'll scoot it around as much as a foot in any directions, but sometimes even a half or a quarter makes a big difference. Half the time I'm tracking/playing ...

Beyer M160: Nickel vs. Black?
Does any one have an opinion on this? Do the Nickel finised Beyer M160's sound any different from the Black ones? Does any body know if that means they're of a different vintage? I've been watching for some and wondered if any one has a prefference.
Thanks,
Dan

Re: Guitar sounds - different mics and placements
This is going beyond mic placement alone, but you mentioned something about a 'new' distorted guitar sound. I hope you this works for you. I had a lot of luck running guitar tracks thru the filter section of a 70's Pro One analog synth and dialing in some left of center distortion. It's definitely a...
