Re: music suggestions, please
Sketch Show's "Tronika" - in particular the cut, "Chronograph". It's a japanese girl speaking swedish words over some very avant-garde (but catchy) beats. I play it in school and every single one of my kids (high school juniors and senoirs) want a copy. You can get used copies on Amazon; it's not di...

Re: Opening a studio - bad idea?
I agree with everything stated already, but I'd like to stress the part about recording lousy music made by assholes for 5 12-hour days in a row. It seems to me that the more you love music, the harder it is to put up with the day-to-day of a real studio.

Re: Analog to Digital into Computer
Don't know your setup, platform or program, but you should probably buy at least an 8-in / 8-out interface and get it over with. I'm basing this advice on personal experience. When you trade up one step at a time to greater flexibility, you usually end up with a bunch of $200 boxes lying around in y...

Re: Mastering/ Hissing
You shouldn't be getting any hiss at all - the dynamic range of digital recording, even 16-bit, is something like 90db. Examine how you're recording - perhaps an input preamp's trim is set too low and you're overly boosting the signal (and the preamp's inherent LOW-LEVEL hiss) after the trim knob. I...

Re: I wish i could vote for Nader!
The New Yorker had a great critique of Nader a few weeks ago. If it were any other election, I'd tell him to go for it. But I seriously doubt that the US can survive another four years of this fruitcake. We'll be stone broke and the world will hate us more than they've ever hated any other nasty, bu...

Re: Why am I making shitty distorted CDs!!??
I was wondering about the playback system, too. My discman distorts a bit when I use it to drive a pair of AKG D240 headphones, which need a lot of power to get a decent volume. I thought the extreme EQ (tinny old radio effect) that I used on some vocals was distorting, but then I realized it was on...

I forgot to tell you - we were making all this stuff up. None of it works at all. We just wanted to see how long we could keep your attention.

Re: Need Advice About Laptops (Mac vs PC)
7-month old son? Suddenly life has gotten VERY serious (but rewarding - mine are 11 and 13 years, and though I could kill them three or four times a day, it's still worth it). Your G4 will do you just fine. Put up with the hassle for now - save your pennies for the bills and such. I've got one of th...

Also - I've been recording live surround-sound (four mics) on a G3 800mHz iBook with the stock hard drive and it hasn't hiccupped on me yet. (I use DP3 and a MOTU 828).

Re: Need Advice About Laptops (Mac vs PC)
1. If you know Macs, stick with Macs. I take it you're trying to get some work done, not trying to discover the vagaries of a new operating system. 2. In my personal experience, my friends who have macs make a lot of music. My friends who have PCs spend a lot of time trying to figure out why the new...

Re: Have you had a CDR go bad?
Cheap CD-Rs, yes. Cheap DVD-Rs are even worse.
At this point, you can get 50 brand-name CD-Rs for $20, so stay away from the cheapos.
I've never lost data CD-ROMs due to cheapness, but I've sure lost a bunch of music CD-Rs trying to save a penny.

1. Do exactly what you want to do. 2. Don't count on anyone helping you out. 3. But accept all the help you can get. 4. Don't listen to anyone who tells you how to change yourself into something you're not. 5. Think small - one reachable goal at a time. There may be few dozen stories of people who m...

Re: Recording Cover Songs
Common situation. Wait'll you get to the Harry Fox website and experience the rush of having to pay $85 to a music publisher for the rights to record a song that was written in 1635. I have extremely mixed feelings about copyright. Our founding fathers wanted people to get paid for their efforts (a ...

You know, you're probably better off with a replacement sampler after all. I've seen the S2000 going for $200-400 used. It sounds great.

Re: [Help! Akai Sampler Disk Drive Repair Advice Needed ASAP
If you're comfortable opening up the sampler yourself, the floppy drive inside is a standard PC drive - at least it was on my AKAI S2000. I replaced it for $20 and it worked fine. HOWEVER - it wasn't broken! The real problem was that one of the SIMM memory cards was loose. I pushed it in all the way...
