I'm in the middle of this book right now just called "Monk". It's cool, because the author assumes that you already have a basic knowledge about the music and Monk, and goes from there... Highly recommended... The author has some great stories about Monk as a kid, and makes the point that Monk didn'...

I found one not too long ago in a pawn shop that is unused and even smelled new...

It's totally possible to spend 250 bucks on a guitar and get something that sounds great on tape, but mandolins are probably the poster child for why one needs to throw money at an instrument in order to get something that sounds and plays good...
