Re: Headphone Boxes and Headphones
Rolls makes a small (stomp-box small), very cheap, 4 channel headphone amp. It's not too bad but not too good either.

Micro-Korg. It has some great pre-sets (that you can tweek and save), you can write and save your own sounds, it has an arpegiator, and a vocoder.
It rocks and is only a few hundred bucks.

Re: gtr cab mics
The only bad thing I have to say about the 421 is that the housing sucks. One misplaced drum-stick and the mesh part of the housing falls to bits. As a live sound tech I've come across more of these held together with tape than any other mic. Don't get me wrong, I love 421's. I just wish they weren'...

Ad the Beyer m88 to that list. I've just started using it for vocals. It doesn't work on everyone but when it works it sounds great.

Re: realistic mic element.
I'm not sure which capsule your talking about but if it's the same as is used in their pzm then the power supply circuit from the tape-op diy mini condenser mics should work on it. I think there is a link to the schematic from the Tape-op homepage. Just be warned that if it is the same capsule it ha...

Re: synths into guitar amps?
I run synths into a guitar set-up all the time. The trick is to find a clean sounding amp and match it with a high rated speaker. I run my keys (Roland sh-1000, Baldwin Synth-a-Sound, Hohner Pianet T, and Micro Korg) into a Traynor Custom Reverb head and 300 watt Mesa Boogie 2x10 bass cab. I've neve...

Cocksucker Blues while not a very good film is worth every penny for the footage of a young Stevie Wonder rocking the shit out of the Uptight/Satisfaction meddly. I wouldn't want to go on stage after that, even if I was in the Rolling Stones

Re: Drum Micing: Set up order and phase checks...
I always work from the overhead in. I usualy track drums in mono with a single OH. Most of the sound is that mic with others added to taste. I spend most of my time finding the best spot for the OH and then do the close mics as quickly as I can before the drummer gets board and restless.

The Art Tube MP sounds like shit but sometimes shit is just what you need.
It's much better at fucking up a sound than being transparent. It's my wepon of choise for distorted kick.

Re: great sounding crap sounding devices
The Boss Compressor/Sustainer pedal is great on snare and overheads. It's noisy as hell but sounds great if you bring it up on it's own chanel and mix it with the unaffected drum sound. Is squashes the shit out of everything, even at it's lowest setting.

Re: The Stones...Exile On Sticky Fingers....whaddaya know?
There was a good story on the recording of Exile on Main Street last year in one of the other recording mags. Home Recording I think. I don't remeber much of the details.....It was recorded in Keiths basement (in a castle in France) and the horns we're recorded in the US. I think they just sent the ...

SM94 pin-out
I've come across an SM94 that has had the xlr connection pulled out (it still has the xlr but all the wires have been detatched). There are 4 wires - brown, black, green and white. Does anyone know which wires attach to which pins?

Re: tips for recording drum machine?
I had this same problem when doing a record for a performer from Montreal named Ledehosen Lucil. She a one woman band who plays everything on a Yamaha keyboard that's kind of like an old home organ with preprogramed beats and bass lines. Basicly the whole bed track comes out of one jack on the keybo...
