Re: Low Budget Monitors
I use the Tannnoy 6.5 PBM II's, and love them. I also use the Rat Shack 5" and find them useful for comparison, along with some cheap Altec computer monitors, a Sony boombox set, etc.; I even have a pair of the Rat Shack's set up on the bedposts to make a sort of headphone listening experience when ...

Re: Pearl Jam live records
I like 'em.
I like the band.
I think this "bootleg on demand" idea is a good one,; I have a few shows and the performances arre excellent, and the sounquality very good, much better'n a boot if not quite polished.

"You Send Me", from Labour of Lust, as I have posted before, has one of the most intimate, close-mike'd vocals ever, and each lip smack seems like another peice of genius because he left it in...

In Prince's studio on the Controversy album when he starts all that moaning and... Wait, no, I would not want to be there then ! But the rest of the session... Tool's Undertow , with Massey, or even Opiate . RHCP when the did the Clinton album, more for the fun than the tuneage. Either of Dylan's la...

Try using a dbx163X as a DI; you'll be surpised. (You might not get what you want, depending on the bass, but I bet you'll like it.)

Re: van halen remasters
Mr Sims said, "never met / spoken with one person who prefers van hagar." My ex wife did. I think we first made it to F.U.C.K. Glad she's my ex. I can't believe I told that embarassing story, but it's true! But then, she liked Ozzy better than Sabbath... Mebbe because she looked like that chick on t...

I like my 1006. But then, I like my C1000S, and even my Behringer B1, so YMMV. But I find the MXL and my SM58 the most useful.

... you pester your friends sequentially (so as not to wear them out) to listen to various rough mixes of works-in-progress, alternating between something you know they'll like with something you are sure they'll hate, asking questions such as "Can hear the kick drum on that CD walkman?" and "What d...

Re: What to double
When doubling acoustics, and especially on a 12-string, I like one done stereo with an SD on the soundhole and an LD in the room, the other done stereo with the LD closer and the SD farther. Gives a cool phasey thing, and again, especially with a 12-string.

Re: low brow mastering/mixing eq...
Such a general question for what are undoubtedly some specific problems. As a starting point, look at 50Hz and lower, and generally at 200-250Hz and 400Hz. Better yet, look at some books (Modern Recording, etc.) and/or web sites (try studiocovers.com) and start with their advice. Best yet, use yer e...

Re: Processing 16 bit files OK, or start over?
(Just got done watching the VH1 special on Warren Zevon; I feel, eh, verklempt. ) Yeah, the DAW iz by Boss, owned by Roland; it allegedly has the best compression scheme of the VS units, but it is compressed. But I do like it, and I consider myself a writer first (even if I have little or no audienc...

Re: Processing 16 bit files OK, or start over?
Thanx for the quick response. I record on an 8 track DAW (BR8) that is 16/44.1 and mix through TOS-Link to a Dio 2496, recording into CEP at 32/44.1. I prefer not to record direct into the computer for a number of reasons including hobbiest outboard equipment and mic's, general laziness re learning ...

Processing 16 bit files OK, or start over?
I record on a 16 bit DAW, and mix to CEP into a 32 bit file, 44.1 KHz. I then edit same and convert to 16 bit to burn on CD. OK, so far. My questions: 1. If I decide a track needs additional processing, does it matter if I upsample the topped-and-tailed 16 bit file to 32 bit to do that, or should I ...
