Having a hard time focusing on the whole song cuz yr focusing on the minute details? I have a really cool pic of Bruce Springsteen right between my near fields. I focus on that instead, somehow it lets the music come into my ears without that narrow point of attention.

On the subject of tunnels out front: My old drummer had a padded kick case. I just fitted the open end against the front with the mic inside. You don't need a fancy frame to lay blankets over, just a tall chair, or coffee table. This is the one area where us guys recording at home have an advantage,...

I think Sears is absolutely right. The whole impetus behind the lo-fi movement was to make music on your own terms, with whatever gear you had available. I don't think that any of those bands were deliberately trying to sound bad. I know for sure that GBV made the choice to record at home simply so ...

Okay, this is what I wanted to talk about, (in the other "crappy sounds" thread) the philosophy and specific methods of working with sounds which are deliberately less than optimum.
Please continue...

Ya gotta remember, when The Jimi Hendrix Experience (for instance) first got into the studio, I bet the engineers spent their tea break talking about how horrible that guitar sound was....

This is not actually what I was talking about at all, I meant using crappy sounds "on purpose" in an indie rock or singer/songwriter kinda context. Going back to the architectural reference, heavy rock really depends on solid materials throughout, like a steel framed building. What I was getting at ...

I gotta second that. I had never been able to get an accoustic sound that I liked until I got my Shiny Box ribbon (with the most basic transformer, I think it was $150).
Put that up next to the AKG C1000s and mix 'em down to one track as I record, with no EQ or compression. Instant great sound.

My best recoring ever! Real tape echo!

www.myspace.com/junkyardtodd01

Hey, more home recorded madness. Ran the lead vox and slide guitar off to my tape four track, then brought 'em back and synced everything by hand/ear for Beatles style ADT, which actually flanges a little here and there....
No, it does not take a lot to get me excited!

Absolutely. There is really no law requiring us to present everything in full spectrum absolute hi-fidelity. If he's hoping to get played on college radio the tape hiss and etc... may work in his favor.

Working with Crappy Sounds?

Towards the end of the Bjorn Yttling interview he talks about building recordings around crappy songs, using "odd bits" as "bearing members" of the song. (dig the architecture reference!). How do you go about doing this? I mean, most of the best guitar leads are kinda broken sounding, and it seems l...

Need basic drum looping in a stand alone format

Hey, I wanted to try using drum loops for my next project. I would like to create stereo mixes in my PC and then take them over to my Yamaha 2816 via a CD. I would need to be able to record on it too, just to create guide tracks. And obviously I wouldn't want to spend a lot.
Any suggestions?

After watching it I was struck with appreciation for my normal, happy life, even if my songs aren't as great as his. I was really loving the vox sound on the song at the end, I think it was one of the ones recorded in NYC with Steve Shelley. It was just swimming in reverb but sounded absolutely perf...

Stupid Recording Tricks/I LUV U JOHHNY MARR

As someone who works mostly alone I am always trying stupid stuff to get a more "live" feel. This time I ran my drum machine through the old (1950's) magnatone and sang and played accoustic rhythm gtr along with it. Mics were a Shinybox ribbon and a Rode NT1 into the ART MPA, with both mics setup as...

You are just starting out in home recording right? It's a lot of fun, right? Plus the more you do it, the better you get, so I would do whatever it took to get the dude back to re-do it. Spend some more time getting the sounds. Everyone will be glad you did.
