Thanks guys, Just to clarify - zoning is such that no additional structure can exceed 10m2 - I'm maxing out my site coverage with the deck that I'm putting on to the back of the house. But you can vary the dimensions to work within that 10m2. Trouble is you start to lose the ability to put things (l...

space dimensions
Hi all, I'm planning a small, single room space for recording and mixing. Just enough room to set up a drumkit, amp iso box, and a few mics. I'm going to go with a separate structure in the back yard - concrete slab, staggered studs and 2 leaf gyprock with green glue. Nice little room to make some n...

I just restored a 28 X 12"marching bass drum, put spurs on it and layed it down. Batter heads on both sides (coated Powerstroke on beater, clear Evans EQ on the resonant) with no hole. Filled it 1/3 with shredded paper to chase the Bonzo vibe... The results: Very open sound, endless resonance with a...

Mike Stavrou's book "Mixing with your Mind" has some great tips on dealing with spill without resorting to screening or breaking up the intimate vibe that the players like. Basically, his approach is to position the quieter instruments where the spill from the louder ones becomes an asset rather tha...

I'm a big fan of Splender Solis and Edges of Twighlight - first two albums. I missed the next couple of albums but have Seven Circles, their last record. Not too sure about some of the songs on this one (I suspect that they are trying to sell more records!!) but the production is stunning - totally ...

Remember that cymbals emit even (smooth) and odd (grit) harmonics and how much of each you capture will depend on your mic placement. I like to get up high and vertical above the cymbals to get a smooth full bodied sound. If I want a bit more trash I'll use a mic in front of the kit along the same p...

I like figure 8's for acoustic guitars... Front side adressing the guitar on a slight angle about a foot out, back side gets a small amp in the room being fed from the guitar's jack and screaming it's nuts off. I move the amp to get the balance - adds a really nice buzz to strummed acoustic tr...

My comment was only half smart-assed. I've got a little set of Rat Shack speakers, Minimus .3 (yes point 3 ) that I won't mix without. If it sounds like a mix on those its usually good elsewhere... Ditto for this approach - my little 3" polk audio computer speakers tell me nothing about tones but a...

Yamaha i88x interface
Anyone using one (or more) of these?
I picked up one today on trial because the specs look great and the price is so good.
I'm interested in your feedback.
Thanks
Stu
