Re: fear for fingers
I got a very odd cut right before a session several years back. I did the session, after cleaning and bandaging. It wasn't feeling great, but I got the gig done, and while I was cleaning up I hit the hand on a mic stand and saw stars. I got home and was redressing the wound and realized just how dee...

Re: Snare side head tuning?
Mine are all sorta medium-tight. General observation: the harder you hit, the looser the snare side head and strainer need to be. More experienced drummists please correct me if I'm wrong, but that's my experience. Having both cranked can be great for quiet funk but if you're winding up on a rimsho...

Re: Snare side head tuning?
I'm also in the medium tight range as a starting point. There are times I mess around and see what happened because I'm in the ballpark, but not at the sound I'm looking for. I think bottom head and snare tension both need to make sense together. I like the bottom head tight enough that I can mess w...

Re: Very basic question regarding Input gain & Fader while mixing
Looking at your mixer there are input gain knobs, do those only control mic gain, or are they active for the line inputs as well? If they are active on the line inputs, you can adjust them to control the INPUT level to the mixer, and use the fader as you output to the stereo bus. I would keep the fa...

Re: fear for fingers
I've always been conscious of what I do with my hands. It doesn't stop me from banging myself up in day to day life (knives, walls, cars all get me on occasion). I'm kinda klutsy. My problem is a ton of chronic pain in the rest of my body. I see the chiropractor every other week and that's just to k...

Re: The bottom of the snare
wasn't someone just joking about that snare buzz plug? yeah, I may hafta do that; my drummer is a minimalist, doesn't keep old stuff, unlike me whose house is, as my daughter says, "like living inna guitar store" It actually works. I've used it on a track where I didn't like what the mic I used und...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....
I ordered an Eastwood Classic 12 B-stock at 40% off. I've been lusting after one for a while. I wanted a different color, but $449 for a $749 guitar was too good of a deal to pass up. Do you play any other electric 12s? I got a Schecter Ultracure xii awhile back on a similar good deal, but not hist...

Re: Creating depth in mixes
This is an interesting topic that I rarely think about... I guess mostly because I'm really a live sound mixer, which has different goals and needs sometimes. In particular I tend to think in terms of the arrangement - what needs to be heard? Obviously in a live show it's hard to leave out the stuf...

Re: The bottom of the snare
I always mic the bottom. If I get tracks from somebody with no mic on the bottom I re-amp the snare track with a snare drum sitting on top of a Fender Pro Jr and mic the snares there. I almost always have an 1176 plug on the bottom snare fast attack/slowest release. now I just needa snare ... :twis...
