I've made lots of rookie moves, but please allow me to post someone else's. There was a thread on GearSlutz a while back with a title that cracked me up for weeks:

"I blew it. Should I tell the band? 16 bit."

I recommend the "Ships Piano," by Pendle. It's superb. I own Akoustik Piano from Native Instruments, which takes tons of EQ to sounds even close to "real" to my ears. The Ships Piano always sits so well in a mix. It's imperfect. You have to "retune" with the Kontakt Player. But, it never fails to ch...

KennyLusk - sounds like we're in the same "budget bracket." I've got an EHX 12AY7 too - love it. I went in for a toneport. I couldn't resist. It just looked like such a fun toy. And it is just that - a toy. But, sometimes toys sound good on albums (think Beatles blowing bubbles into mic'd up jars of...

Somebody on this very board (I forget who) recently recommended Behind the Glass . It's a collection of interviews with various record producers. Lots of engineering / mic placement / gear talk. The interviewer repeats many of the same questions from producer to producer - which is great because you...

John Lennon once proposed the idea of recording his vocal whilst spinning from a rope hung from the ceiling, tied to his feet. I think he hoped that circling the mic would give him a Leslie effect or something. The engineer pointed out that hanging the mic from the ceiling and spinning IT might be s...

I'm surprised by how "bro-bra" such an "industry leader" sounds on his website. This guy's like a top mastering engineer, isn't he? I was kinda charmed by gear reviews like: "kinda sucks," or "sounds shitty, but was really expensive," but his website doesn't exactly make me want to pony-up a fortune...

Speaking of the E Street Band. I ran into Max Wienberg a few years ago at a Deli in NYC. In typical tourist fashion, I told him what a fan I was of the Conan O'Brian show. He invited me to sit with him and his Mom. Nice guy. He said, "I'll set aside a few tickets for you and your pals. Come by the s...

Well once you get what Bees is at worked out, you can try the Gly John's method -- it's about the simplest and a good starting point. http://www.danalexanderaudio.com/glynjohns.htm Getting the "overheads" as close as possible to the same distance from the snare and kick beater is key, imo. Makes mi...

I was watching the footage, and my 3 year old asked me "Why is he sad?" :( Regards ju Whoa. Three year olds are incredibly perceptive. I've got one too. He recently noticed a pock-mark on my forehead and asked, "Daddy, what is that hole in your head? Does a small animal live in there?"

Elliot Smith was there too, only he was called John Denver. You guys who are saying both John Lennon and Elliot are not so accurate with their vocal doubles have me worried. I'm a vocal doubler (sum of two of my off key notes = one relatively in tune note). It's precisely these two dudes I th...

I just got a Tascam Two Track machine from my buddy here in town. I've been doing all my recording lately by recording digital off the playback head. You have to calculate the latency in order to get tracks to line up. It's pretty easy though: you simply record two tracks at a time, one straight to ...
