Re: the mxl 990 isn't that bad
I have a small comercial studio and I use these things for vocals and for percusion. They worked really well for a project I did with a lot of hand percusion instruments. The percusion player had a table full of stuff and I was able to capture everything very well with two 990's in stereo about 4' i...

Re: Pro Tools Stigma
I think bombastic hit it on the head:
Go git yourself a M-box with ProTools LE or find a used Digi001 with ProTools software.
You can say you have it for about $400 but you dont have to use it.

I am finally open and starting to take sessions for the first time. For a short time I am offering tracking at $100 per 8 hours, + $25 per hour for final mastering. Re: Magic Garbage Can
I just checked out a few of your MP3 tracks. I cant really comment on the recording itself since MP3's sound like shit on my PC.
I liked Tranquility enough that I listened to it several times in a row. Very nice song. Very very very nice.

Magic Garbage Can
I found a neat and cheap trick to adding an amazing amount of thump to a kick drum - a Rubbermaid garbage can. I took the front head off my kick drum and clamped the can in place of the head with a little auralex foam in between to kill any rattle. Its a full size can (30gal?) and I cut an app. 12" ...

Re: Will mix for free.
mfedderman- I think its great that you are able to stay so busy in a city that is flooded with studios. Kudos. But there are plenty of studios going out of business because a lack of work and some of these studios have great engineers, equipment and recording rooms - the cream so to speak. I would a...

Re: SM57 trick - or I'm a dummy. You decide.
I honestly never thought about sticking my ear where the microphone is going to sit. That totally makes sense. I am going to start doing this in the studio. Live I guess I'm stuck micing off-axis. I already have the 212 cabinet at a 45 in front of me like a monitor and the amp is pegged(100 Watt pow...

SM57 trick - or I'm a dummy. You decide.
I prefer using a 57 about 1-2' from my 212 cabinet and a pair of Rode NT-5's for a stereo track when recording. When I play live I can't do this and I have never been happy with the sound of a SM57 straight on the center of the speaker. After playing around with the 57 in the studio I found the best...

Re: Will mix for free.
I had to read this thread after reading FREE! I agree that the direction the industry and technology are going its harder to make any money playing or recording music. I dont think offering your services for free is adding to the problem. Since its cheaper to build a small recording room then it is ...
