Re: Kick size - 20 vs 22 vs 24

as with most things musical, IT DEPENDS. i play a 28" marching (not deep) drum with no holes in the front head and no muffling inside. it doesn't sound gigantic compared to my 22", but it's surely louder and can compete with the full stacks the rest of the band uses. i'm looking for a 16" rack tom (...

will 2 be enough? is your vintage equipment racked up and on wheels? how is access to your building? my "associates" don't like stairs.

Re: found dat deck in dumpster

save the dat machine. they'll stop making them soon, you can charge $$$ to transfer old dat masters to whatever the current archival medium is... provided dat tapes are still working when the working machines become more scarce, aren't dat tapes beginning to fail already? really, there isn't a forma...

Re: vintage altec pre's and mics????

The M20's used to be my favorite tom mics of all time. Now I have a pair of microphones that I am less afraid will get killed by a stick hit, so they are my new favorites because they give me 99.9% of what the altecs gave me, and a little more top, and cost 1/20th of the altec. do tell! - altec fre...

Re: good condenser for distortified guitar

what amp, what guitar, what *kind* of distortion?

i mean there's fender bassman-being-overdriven kind of distortion, and there's an orange amp on 10...

if you like 414s, compare older ones to newer ones, there's a difference.

Re: 2 inch tape machine purchase?!

yeah you can swap 440 cards with mm cards. i *think* the 1000 was based on a video transport, maybe ampex wasn't sure that big tape would be popular... then the 1100 had a different transport, and the 1200 "fixed" some problems of the 1100. i think the 1100 was only made for the shortest span of the...

Re: Wiring my Studio!

(opinion)
punchdown bays are often poorly made and the connections are poorly connected. 1/4" in / 1/4" out (tascam et al) is a bad idea. and never send mic levels through such a patch bay.
(/opinion)

anyone have a source for cheap TT cables (any length)?

Re: 2 inch tape machine purchase?!

i have an mm1100, and people had warned me about the MMs being "MasterMunchers" and things, or that they require a lot of maintenance. it's not that hard. no ICs in these things, schematics and manuals are available, and there's a great resource in the ampex mailing list. members on that email list ...

Re: bay area, CA: live location recording on your 2, 4, 8 tr

duh. of course, sorry. still, the mic needs of the club will be different (at least for drums), and i'd rather just let the club do their thing, and us do our thing. they seem easily confused ("there's no hole in your front bass drum head, where do i put the microphone?"), and i don't want to make i...

cactus club: it's one of those psuedo-urban dance type places now, maybe they have zima on tap. someone was stabbed there recently, which i don't think ever happened at the cactus club, as sh*tty as it was. my favorite show there was yo la tengo (in 1997?), but san jose didn't agree, there were prob...

Re: What is this little omni EV dynamic mic?

yeah i think the beach boys did a lot of vocals with the 666, and a lot of guitar with the 635a. as far as i know, the 666 is long out of production, but you can find them (approaching $200 each on average). maybe the tape op mentions are driving the price up. i love them though, and they're stylish...
