Well, when I used CEP my other DAWs were ProTools and SonicStudioHD. Simple gain changes in CEP were really, really poor - fidelity in roundtrips (successive reciprocal gain changes where final step returned signal to unity) was non-existent in CEP... PT wasn't great with this torture test either bu...

I dunno... those sorts of dichotomies are truisms at the very best. In reality the world is rarely so simple.

Grados are great for listening. Pick a model, even the cheapo iPod versions sound good.

I've changed the ear muffs (a lot of aftermarket stuff for them) for comfort, and use them all the time.

Not recommended for isolation/recording - they're open backed.

The Cool Edit Pro heritage makes me a little queasy... that apps primary developer spent most of the 90s fighting a losing flame war with every other DAW maker on the planet, to defend truncation or rounding as superior to dither. On a certain intellectual level he had a minor technical point, but s...

I really don't see much gray area here... if you booked the session, it was YOUR session, Chris. Regardless of who wrote a check etc... etc... etc... You booked it. You are the client. A good studio manager is on top of bookings and should know this. It's his/her responsibility to keep things moving...

MoreSpaceEcho: I agree it's very powerful, and as you might have guessed, I'm ONLY using Montage for the most part (don't need the rest very often - batch proc is great though). ;) Before getting an eLicense key to demo the app (just bought it for real), I had demo'd WL6 at a buddy's place, and foun...

I'm demo'ing WL7 on mac, and yeah it's very nice. But it's also a pretty steep climb, full of quirks. For instance, bouncing a file is called "rendering", not exporting or bouncing, and if you search the manual for the more conventional terms you get nothing. If you look in the menu for this functio...

The compression/codecs in SourceConnect can be set to be identical to that of the codecs it supports because it has to match up. While hardware Worldnet boxes can nominally do "lossless" audio, end-to-end quality may be lower than "lossy" compressed formats based on mundane realities like sample rat...

SourceConnect IS (or rather, can be) ISDN. It generally connects to hardware boxes, provided you have an ISDN line or a permanent, static IP and the know-how. One path relies on "bridges" which are service companies who connect remote systems together. At my old job we had both hardware ISDN boxes a...

btw... TapeOp is a great example of "free" practices at work, and sells to a pure "long tail" audience (thousands of home tapers and musicians forming a prosumer market). I bet TapeOp has a longer shelf life in most studios and coffee tables than other magazines, and I know it's viewed as more legit...

Chris Anderson himself has written a reasoned response to the wsj piece, so I see no need to restate that here. A problem with "long tail" conversations is that most parties misunderstand the theory; it never challenges or even addresses the "fat head" that Larry refers to (the 20 top sellers repres...

huh?

what's new here? IODA is giving ReD access to their digital network. If they bought an interest, well that's news, but doesn't solve bricks and mortar. ReD's been around, so that's not new either.

What am I missing?

The only issues I've ever had are interface related: integrating external pres and converters with D-Control is odd in systems that have the remote controllable pres. Not a problem at all - it just makes you hate your better-sounding outboard gear because you have to tweak in at least 2 non-D-contro...

I've recorded many shows and location gigs on my 1.2 gHz Titanium G4(s) without a problem over the past couple years. No hiccups or issues, even with 16 channels @ 96K. This worked because I was using a couple ULN8s or a 2882 and a ULN8 for these sessions... they provide all the horsepower, so the l...
