I would guess that the earthworks pre would be hard to clip (although I've never used one, so I can't say for sure):

maybe when the drummer goes crazy you are overloading the mics? You could try using a -10db pad to see if that helps for the more intense parts...

My md player lacks a digital output, so I just use the line out into my soundcard. I'm sure I'm losing a bit to the additional da/ad conversion, but for my uses I'll never notice.

I really like echo's stuff (I've got a layla24). RME makes a pcmcia adapter for their stuff. As for firewire, the motu 828mk2 looks like a good deal. That new tascam all-in-one box (kind of like a cheaper digi 002) looks pretty neat. Yamaha has a similar unit on the way as well. Here's what audiomid...
