Re: Lap Steel Choices
Indeed Ricky's are among the best laps ever made. The lap steel market is largely undervalued at this point. I can get a 40's or 50's vintage guitar for under $500.00 in most cases whereas a spanish electric (standard guitar) of the same relative era and mfr would be at least 3 to 4 times that. Six ...

I got a 1954 Fender Champ (with the original Tele pickup) for $250 on eBay as well as a 1947 Ricky model "B" bakelite for around $500.00. Both are 100% playable and give you tone to die for.
I also have a GFI pedal steel.
Have fun with them, I get lost for hours playing mine.

Re: fixing monitoring problems
A pink noise generator, calibrated mic and realtime spectrum analyser would do the job if you had them. The RTA can be found in software. So can the pink noise generator. The closer the mic (and preeamp) is to ruler flat, the truer the measurement.

Re: Tube AMps: Tone and Care
I've been running and servicing tube amps since the mid '60's. Power tubes can last many years as many have expressed before me. Preamp section can last even longer. Even more importantly the quality of current tube manufacturer is on the rise. SED/Svetlana 6L6's aree amongst the best of the type ev...

I had a Shure Unidyne II that was doing tha (high SP only) I took it apart and found that the foam had deteriorated through the years and was turning to foam dust. Perhaps some foriegn debri or mic aging .

Re: Mixing desk opinions
Thanks for all the imput. I guess I have it all hashed out now. I'm gonna keep the analog mix path and go with a used GhostLE24 or Ghost LE32 if I can find one. If not then I guess it will be a ne Ghost LE24. The Topaz looks attractive but parts are now made in China. Ummm, I'm not a snob but I DO w...

Re: Mixing desk opinions
" Sounds like what you are actually looking for is a console to 'track' with or 'monitor' through. Am I wrong? Why not get a set of Neve line amps and be done with it? Guess we need to discuss what you're recording to to talk further about this. I stand corrected on the mixing desk term. Yes, that ...

Re: Mixing desk opinions
The Topaz? That's my ideal board. Both good value and quality. I wish I had the cash in my pocket. I'm waiting for some money ($12,000.00)to come in. The check is is supposed to be here within 30 days. The story of my life, but you have confirmed my suspicions about the "M" and "B" mixers. Maybe if ...

I have a small project studio that I am thinking of upgrading. I presently have a TASCAM 1/2 " 8 channel reel to reel and a presonus firestation. I'm going to add a 24 channel HD recorder to track on. I will be able to move the files to a DAW for editing, I've always maintained an anaalog signal pat...

Re: Internal Hard Drives
SATA is faster than IDE for DAW tasks. I can peel over 64 track at a a time on mine using nTrack and dual SATA's. You can imagine what I could do with better  software. They are about $20-30 more than thier IDE counterparts. Also just to mention Gibson Research's "spin-right" is that "ace-in-t...

Re: the old tube religion
Just wanted to chime in and say that the US Military still uses tubes for key mission critcal equipment for "Radiation Hardening" purposes. Tubes made for the military are desinated as JAN(Joint Army/Navy) tubes. These were made for durability, not musical qualities and can sound more "stridant" the...

Re: Analog Multitrack vs. DAW...is one really better?
I don't know how often I hear of guys getting cheap Fostex or Tascam recorders and find out they need $1000+ worth of work....if you can even find the parts. later, m Very true on both acccounts. I've had mine since '93 and maintained it personally since then. Still, I picked up a TASCAM 3440 (anot...

Re: Analog Multitrack vs. DAW...is one really better?
Chet, I use my TSR-8 for entirely different reasons than to get "that sound". Mainly it's because I'm a dinosaur. I grew up with tape machines and, while embracing digital technology for editing and mixing, find it easier to track on tape. The TSR was the last machine I bought new. It's a very clean...
