word clocks
i'm using an iffy set of mic pre's (presonus digimax lt) and using the word clock off it for my protools. i'm not too happy with how the thing sounds overall. i know a lot of it is the probably the mic pre quality but would my track sound quality improve drastically enough if i clocked off an indepe...

what should my first microphone purchase be?
i know this is very subjective but i don't even know where to begin. looking for a condenser under $1000 that would be good for vocals, acoustic guitar, percusssion, etc... just a good "all purpose" kind of condenser. (i've already got the standard sm57/58's so this seems like the next logical step)...

Re: Harddrive question!!!!!PLEASE
i bought one about a month ago and have had no issues yet. i haven't heard anything about them containing two seperate physical disks... i find that hard drives are like cars...you can get lucky (or unlucky) with any brand any time. of course, it should always meet the base specs, 7200 rpm, 911 brid...

so why is it so bad to mix in the box?
i am constantly hearing from people that it is absolute heresy to mix to stereo within protools, especially LE systems. i too prefer a tried and true mixer but the convenience of the box is often tempting. i've heard records that were mixed in the box that have sounded great... so what exactly is ha...

Re: how much RAM?
don't buy your ram from apple either. there's all this hype about how you need to buy apple ram for your apple computer. well i went out and spent $700 on 1 freaking gig for my powerbook (purchased at the apple store) only to get home, open and see it was made by samsung. yes this is, as i've discov...

Re: Harddrive Question for Powerbook
for the best value i would reccomend nothing less than 160gig. if you notice the pricing on those drives it's often no more than a $40 difference for an extra 100gig! also make sure you partition these large drives too. i usually split a 160 into two 80's and try not to have a partition any bigger t...

LIVE RECORDING WITH PROTOOLS LE
i do live show recording with protools le 002 but up until now have been fine just using the 8 digital inputs/ 8 tracks. i run the digital inputs through an apogee converter. i soon will be looking to use all 18 (including the 8 analog, 2 s/pdif's). to me, it's seems like this might bring up some la...

mic pre's???
been thinking about buying one of the focusrite 428's. but i've been hearing that since digidesign has been meddling with their technology that they've been cutting a lot of corners with the circuitry and their stuff isn't worth a damn now. if so, any ideas on some good one or two rack space multi-c...

Re: Should I get a G5?
i would throw the pc out the window first. now that we've taken care of that... i've been operating protools LE on a G4 for over a year. it is used on a tour and the computer is mounted horizontally in a road rack and gets thrown onto a truck every night and off to a new city, etc... in point it tak...

desperately seeking mixer
oh but not just any mixer! i'm looking for a 19"rack mountable, 16 channel mixer, preferably not a digital board but digital output options are a plus. it doesn't need to have busses or groups but a pair of aux sends would be great. (people have tried to steer me toward the yamaha o1n but it is way ...
