turning the mic 45 degrees off does work quite well. my other trick is to use a crapped out SM58 from 1985 that must have been soaked in beer or something worse to sound as rounded off as it does! if that mic is AWOL, i have a small flannel bag with a drawstring that i can tie over the address side ...

on the track i just finished, i passed the kick through a low shelf boosted 3db @ just over 200hz (it needed it, really) and high shelf cutting past 1500hz. i think the slope on the eq was 9db, but i'm not sure without looking it up. after that, some medium attack, fast release comp at 6:1. i can't ...
