Re: The Future Engineer - Observations

but I didn't get the sense they were giving students the fundamental interpersonal skills they'll need to succeed. I don't think that can be taught. Unfortunately it's more important than the stuff that can be taught, like signal flow. Curiosity and a willingness to figure out how to do whatever ne...

The only software I know of that puts the ISRC's in the right place in mp3 files is Jaikoz http://www.jthink.net/jaikoz/ Most of the time the aggrigators prepare the files from supplied wav files. I work with a couple of labels that self distribute files. I prepare them with ISRC's but the bit rate ...

There is a term you should learn. It's called "show business".

A 7" at 33 1/3 will usually sound distorted. That's your problem right there. No way around it. 7" was never meant to be cut at 33 1/3. The 4:30 side could be cut at 45 and sound much better. Not so much for the 6 minute side.

This is the worst time of the year to try to get a record pressed. It's important to have cool water to feed through the press to set the vinyl after it has been moulded into the record. It's hard to keep water cool this time of the year. If you can't cool the records properly you have to shut down.

I don't think arguing about whose fault it is will get you very far. Your broker probably has no idea what is involved in creating a vinyl master. Typically it is a transfer of the material to th lacquer disc. The disc is not listened to for fear of damage. The engineer make a guess as to how to set...

Yes, they sound very good. They are on the transparent side. They track stereo program very well. The documentaion is very good and Wayne and Roger are very helpful. It's not expensive to put together. I think about $300 for the stereo not including a case. A case will be another $75-$100 with conne...

I think it depends on who the fans are. Some bands/scenes/labels are vinyl centric. If the people who like the band don't buy vinyl then it doesn't make sense. Vinyl certainly isn't a money making venture. Believe me, I know.

could this work..I have no idea.. I should say yes but the answer is probably no. A partner situation could work but you really don't want any yahoos using the machine. It is way too complicated and easy to damage. It only takes a few milliseconds off doing something stupid to blow up the cutterhea...

Re: Greatest Hits Remastering

I just had no idea that clipping in the digital domain was accepted as a method of raisng levels. Whatever sounds best or least bad depending on how you look at it. Clipping won't always sound better than a given limiter. It depends on the music. If I have to get the levels to stun I'll do a little...

Re: contact cleaner

Acetone is a very strong solvent. It won't hurt metal but it will destroy just about anything else. Be very careful. I wouldn't use it. For metal contacts use contact cleaner for other things like plastic or carbon parts use a cleaner/degreaser. Only use a very little and excersize the pots/switches...

Re: Greatest Hits Remastering

Surprisingly, I got the closest results when simply using the "volume" function to raise it 7 or 8 dB, and just letting it clip. I'm sure that's not exactly what the mastering engineer did, but it sounded a lot closer than using dynamics processing. I was always under the impression that this was n...
