That White Stripes record, "Elephant", was recorded on 1" 8 track, old ribbon mics, old Calrec board etc. with no digital processing whatsoever. STILL sounded modern as hell. Maybe it really was something in the air... i agree with you and whoever else was saying that using older equipment isn't go...

Back to the start of this thread, I read somewhere that Bruce Springsteen carried the Nebraska mixdown cassette around in the glove compartment of his car for a while. I believe that was the very copy that was ultimately mastered and released. Next topic: What did Beck use to record Loser? I recall...

favorite "sounding" albums

i was thinking about my favorite albums when reading another thread on this forum. and i realized there was some that, while not neccesarily the best or even my favorites, i love them for how they sound and they way they're engineered.... the "sonic vibe" if you will. i figure what better place to f...

Re: mic-ing drums with only 2 mics...

I can only devote 2 mics for drums. i'm planning on using a SDC pair in an XY pattern on the drums. and i'll try to configure the room to give the maximum separation, of course. is there a different approach that I might try also? I wanted to get back to a more vintage drum sound. I used two mics (...

which is better..... well, i don't think it's black and white (the question, not the bass. i actually have a black and white bass, and 80's japanese squier bullet bass). personally, i like the sound and feel of jazz basses better. to me, it's a more interesting sound, especially with a little grit. ...

instead of a metronome, program a simple drum machine beat: maybe a shaker on the beat or even just on the 2 and 4. that way a little bleed into the drum mics wouldn't be distracting. depending on the song, of course, as this might not always work. be creative.

hey, what does the dude in the strokes use for his vocal distortion on the first couple albums/live? i can relate to your plight. i'll be the first to say that i'm not a strong vocalist. but sometimes us non-singers forget (or don't realize) that.....how can i put this.....do you play an instr...

Re: harmony central

I think it's a rule that for every guitar pedal reviewed on harmony central at least one person has to say it's "too noisy". harmony central just isn't a very reliable source sometimes. sure, if there are 10 reviews all saying the same thing than i suppose it's fair to assume that there's some vali...

but I'm also curious about dialing it in heavily to soak up lots of the room sound so I can add in another, artificial space and quite literally try to 'move' the recording to a different venue. you mean like tracking in one room, sucking the "room reverb" out, and then reamping elsewhere and just ...

She made her quote when the audience was calling out song titles they wanted her to play and she said: "No one ever asked Van Gogh to paint 'Starry Night' again, man". i like joni mitchell and all, but i've always thought that was a silly thing to say. apples and oranges, really. those are 2 comple...
