Re: Final Mixdowns with a DAW... what are YOU doing???

Experiment, don't rule the box out just yet. Gain structure and plug ins have much to do with the end product. :^: Don't slam the software mix buss. That's where the problem is. I like to make a group called "All minus Master". Just pull that down when you start clogging the master. It'll get good ...

Re: pad the cymbals?

I've not tried it but have heard tape on the underside does the trick. For me... I ask the drummer to bring ALL his cymbals. The little guys work great. Then use his OH mics as the source of his headphone mix. Turn that up with only his kick mic. Everytime he hits a cymbal it drives a spike through ...

Re: Final Mixdowns with a DAW... what are YOU doing???

I'm not looking for a flame war here or anything, but what the heck could possibly be bad about just bouncing to disc? If you have a Master fader on your song, you can tell if you've overloaded the buss. I leave my master fader at 0 db and adjust the individual tracks accordingly. Sending it out th...

Re: tips on getting vocals to sit in the mix

Compress. Then turn down the monitors almost all the way. What are the last things you hear and in what order. The vocal should be last. The snare right before that. Now bring the monitors back up and and see if you can get away with a little less vocal... repeat. This way you've got the vocal loud ...

Re: Mastering Software - what do you use?

Sound Forge 7.0 with the Phase Linear Waves stuff... MutiBand Comp, EQ

Then into HarBal (duck, incoming!)

Then back into Sound Forge for the Waves L2 (duck, here they come again)

Then into CD Architect for order, spacing, level matching, burn Red Book.

Re: "Pop style has stopped happening"...

Well, whatever it takes to get the job done I guess. But... what if a jogger said, "Gee, there are just too many roads. I... I... just don't know which one to run on. I'll sit down on the grass here and figure this out. Ooooh, look at this ant hill". Not so good for the cardiovascilar system. So......

Re: "Pop style has stopped happening"...

i agree with some of this as well, but creating artifical rules about options seems pretty dopey to me. Creating artificial limitations is art. Taken from the opposite perspective you could say, "Hmmm, what colors will I INCLUDE in my next painting". Agreed, and the choice concerning whether you'll...
